History
Construction
The Mirage was built by developer Steve Wynn and was designed by architect Joel Bergman and interior designer Roger Thomas. Built on a site formerly occupied by Castaways and before that, the Red Rooster Nite Club.
The Mirage is proposed at an initial cost of $ 565 million. Investor Michael Milken helped finance the project by selling a $ 525 million mortgage bond. The Mirage is the first resort built with Wall Street money through the use of junk bonds. The project is over budget, and is the most expensive casino hotel in history, with a construction cost of US $ 630 million. The typical gold window of the hotel gets the color of the gold dust used in the staining process.
Mirage construction is considered important because Wynn has set new standards for the Vegas resort, and is widely regarded as the father of Las Vegas today. Prior to the opening of The Mirage, the city experienced a decline in tourism that began in the 1970s, especially around the time that the state of New Jersey legalized gambling and tourists (especially those on the East Coast) began frequent Atlantic City casinos. Also, this is the time when Las Vegas is no longer considered a fashionable destination, so a new project, high profile, is needed to start ailing industry. Wynn is planning a resort to feature boxing matches to compete against the nearby Las Vegas Hilton and Caesars Palace.
Name
Wynn was originally considered to be naming the Golden Nugget resort, after the hotel's Golden Nugget casino in downtown Las Vegas. However, Wynn and others involved with the new resort know that it will need a different name; if not, they believe that the two properties will be known as the "old" and the "new ones". Wynn chose "The Mirage" because of the South Pacific theme. In 1988, to avoid confusion, Wynn purchased the rights on behalf of Mirage from two other businesses, La Mirage Casino and Mirage Motel. Both businesses received $ 250,000 to change their name.
Initial years
The Mirage, originally scheduled for opening in early December 1989, opened earlier on November 22, 1989. At the time of its opening, The Mirage is the largest hotel in the world, with 3,044 rooms. The hotel's tower, a 29-story building, was built in a Y-shape design, a concept that was later copied by Las Vegas' Treasure Island, Monte Carlo, and Mandalay Bay resorts. The hotel's top five floors are used exclusively for high roller rooms and penthouse suites. The Mirage is the first new resort built on the Las Vegas Strip in 16 years, following the completion of the MGM Grand in 1973. When it opened, The Mirage was the first casino to use full-time security cameras in all table games.
Beginning in February 1990, The Mirage is the place for Siegfried & amp; Roy show, held in a 1,500-seat showroom at the resort. Both headliners combine magic and the use of wild animals. The show was closed in 2003 after player Roy Horn suffered severe injuries by Montecore, one of the 650-pound white tigers used in the show.
In 1993, The Mirage hosted a long-running run from the Cirque du Soleil show Nouvelle ExpÃÆ' à © rience in a tent in the The Mirage parking lot. It was during this time that Steve Wynn decided to invite Cirque to create a MystÃÆ'ère for the Treasure Island resort that would soon be built next door. Finally back to where they started in Las Vegas, Cirque du Soleil has a permanent production at The Mirage, Love .
In 1999, The Mirage had 6,000 employees. At that time, Wynn invested $ 100 million into the resort to build two theaters and add to the 130,000 square foot (12,000 m 2 ) convention room. On March 7, 2000, MGM Grand Inc. acquired Wynn's Mirage Resorts for $ 4.4 billion.
In March 2000, Danny Gans began performing at the resort. Prior to that time, Gans performed at the Rio Hotel and Casino. Gans took over the tent in 2004, becoming the resort's main entertainment attraction. In December 2006, the Beatles' ultra-lounge REVOLUTION was opened. This is the first time Cirque du Soleil has been involved in the development of nightspots, operated by The Light Group.
Recent years
Gans left The Mirage in February 2009 to star in a show at Encore Las Vegas. In 2009, ventriloquist and 2007 America's Got Talent winner Terry Fator started a 5-year run at the hotel. Also in 2009, The Mirage is featured on The Amazing Race 15 , where one of the team members had to bungee the other into the air to pick up the bouquet of flowers presented in the Love theater.
In November 2012, the Mirage casino becomes the second Las Vegas casino that offers Blackjack Geoff Hall variant of Black Blackjack, after the Golden Nugget Casino. In 2014, The Mirage is featured on The Amazing Race 24 , where the team must replace the light bulb in the letter 'I' in 'Mirage'.
In 2015, MGM Resorts International announced that it will put Mirage and other properties into a real estate investment trust. MGM will continue to operate The Mirage.
