Sandbridge , in the US state of Virginia, is a coastal community of Virginia Beach, located along the coastline on the Currituck Banks Peninsula at the northern end of the Outer Banks. The Atlantic Ocean is to the east, the Rear Gulf of Currituck Sound is to the west, and the Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge and Cape False State Park are located to the south. To the north, Sandbridge is adjacent to the US Navy Dam Neck facility. Located near the southern end of Sandbridge is Little Island Park, which is managed by City of Virginia Beach. The Sandbridge beach runs about 4.5 miles (7.2 kilometers) from north to south along the ocean coast.

The only public entrance to the community is Sandbridge Road, which is near the northern end of Sandbridge and connects it to businesses and neighborhoods in the Princess Anne area of Virginia Beach. Locals usually have the privilege of driving through the adjacent Dam Neck Naval installation (with permission) to shorten their journey. A special guard is stationed at the south entrance of the base to accept or reject tourists. However, in a post-9/11 "rear gate" atmosphere has been closed for security purposes. By 2025, the coastal city of Virginia plans to complete the expansion of the Nimmo Parkway, which will cut the journey from Sandbridge to its nearest neighbor on Lago Mar by half. It will also be a much more convenient connection to the shopping center and eat at Red Mill, Courthouse and beyond. The multipurpose Nimmo Trail will also be extended next to new roads, making Sandbridge accessible on foot and by bicycle.

Sandbridge is known for its somewhat remote location and accepts smaller visitor volumes than the Virginia Beach resort strip located a few miles north. Virginia Beach EMS Lifeguard Division does not protect water at Sandbridge. They hold four tribunes at Market Place Beach and ten booths in Little Island Beach. There are four guardians guarding a constant patrol over the remaining waters where the lifeguards are not permanently stationed. Lifeguards are on duty every day from 0930 to 1800, Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day.

Sandbridge mainly consists of a single family home; there are also four condo buildings. Many residential properties are available for rent daily, weekly or monthly. The ratio of residents throughout the year to tenants is said to be around 1: 5. During the mid-1990s some homes were lost to the Atlantic, but the effort of replenishing the sand has managed to restore the coast. At one time, it was not uncommon to see a Banker Horse wandering too far north. The horses are known to cause problems eating vegetation from the yard, and sometimes being hit by a vehicle. More fences have been built south of the Virginia/North Carolina border to help solve this problem in recent years.

Major League Baseball third baseman Ryan Zimmerman grew up in Sandbridge, and currently has a holiday home there. Former Virginia governor Bob McDonnell has two properties in Sandbridge.

Weather

The Outer Banks has an unusual weather pattern due to its unique geographic location. When the Banks Currituck Peninsula stands out from the east coast to the Atlantic, Sandbridge has a tendency to be affected by hurricanes, Nor'easters (usually in the form of rain, and rarely snow or mixed rainfall), and other oceanic storms.

Winter is usually lighter than in rural areas, with January lows averaging 34-36Ã, Â ° F (1-2Ã, Â ° C) and highest 50-53Ã, Â ° F (10-12Ã, Â ° C) , and more often. cloudy than in summer. However, Outer Banks exposure makes it vulnerable to higher winds, often causing the wind to shiver to create temperatures that look as cold as inland. Although snow allows, averaging 3 inches (76 mm) every year, there is plenty of time as the years pass between the snow.

The summer months average from a low of 70-76 Â ° F (21-24 Â ° C) to a high of 87-89 Â ° F (31-32 Â ° C), with water temperatures rising from 70 Â ° F (21 Ã, Â ° C) to about 80Ã, Â ° F (27Ã, Â ° C) in August. Spring and fall are usually lighter seasons. Autumn and winter are usually warmer than inland areas, while spring and summer are often a little cooler due to the effects of moderation surrounded by water.

Sandbridge Beach

Sandbridge Beach ( 36Ã, Â ° 44? 46? N 75 Â ° 56? 39? W ) is in the southern part of the coastal city of Virginia. The beach is about 4.5 miles (7.2 kilometers) long, north to south. The location is similar to the Outer Banks of North Carolina, with Back Bay of the Currituck Sound to the west and the Atlantic Ocean to the east. Because of this, it is often referred to as "The Outer Banks of Virginia". Similar to North Carolina's Outer Banks, Sandbridge Beach is sometimes vulnerable to tropical storms, which can lead to mandatory evacuations.

There are no hotels on this beach, but homes and condos can be rented, and this area is a frequented tourist destination. One of the biggest attractions for Sandbridge is its relative remoteness and relaxed atmosphere when compared to the Virginia Beach beaches. Low speed, two-lane Sandbridge Road provides the only access car. Located at the southern end of the beach is the park town of Little Island, which is the location of Sandbridge Pier.

Other notable features of this area are The Sandbridge Market at the north end, and Sandbridge "S-Turns" about half the beach where Sandfiddler and Sandpiper Roads make S-turn. S-Turns is a popular location for locals to "hang out" and surf compared to markets and parks where tourists tend to fill the beach.
