16 Vayathinile ( is on. At Age 16 ; read as Pathinaaru Vayathinile ) is a 1977 Indian romantic-play drama written in and directed by P. Bharathiraja in her directing debut. The film features Kamal Haasan, Sridevi, and Rajinikanth in the lead role, with Ganthimathi, Sathyajith and Goundamani in supporting roles. The film focuses on the strength and vulnerability of Mayil (Sridevi), a 16-year-old schoolgirl, and the challenges he faces and defeats.

The film was originally titled Mayil , and is planned to be funded by the National Film Development Corporation of India. When they retreated, it was taken by S. A. Rajkannu who produced it under the banner of Shri Amman Creations, and was finally given the title. 16 Vayathinile became the first Tamil film actually shot outside; Tamil films are mainly filmed in Chennai studios. The soundtrack album and background score are composed by Ilaiyaraaja, with cinematography by P. S. Nivas. P. Kalaimani wrote a film dialogue.

16 Vayathinile was released on September 15, 1977, and was distributed by Rajkannu himself because no distributor wanted to buy it. Though abolished by the media as an experimental film that will fail, the film received critical acclaim for Bharathiraja's texts, Ilaiyaraaja music and Haasan, Sridevi and Rajinikanth performances. It was commercially successful, running a 175-day theater.

16 Vayathinile attained a cult status in Tamil cinema and was regarded as a film leader depicting the depiction of realistic rural life. Making a star from major directors and actors, the film won many awards. These include the National Film Award for Best Female Playback Singer for S. Janaki; Filmfare Award for Best Actor (Tamil) for Haasan and Special Award for Performance Award for Sridevi; and four State Awards, including Best Director for Bharathiraja and Best Actor for Haasan. It was again made in Telugu as Padaharella Vayasu (1978), in Hindi as Solva Sawan (1979), and in Malay as Melati Putih (1984)).

Plot

Mayil is a 16-year-old girl living in a village with her mother, Guruvammal. Guruvammal also handles the crippled Gopalakrishnan children, called "Chappani" ("Lame") by the villagers and does whatever he can to earn a living. Mayil's ambition is to become a teacher, and she hopes to marry a sophisticated and educated man; although Chappani fell in love with him, he ignored her.

An urban veterinarian named Sathyajith arrived in the village to work and fell in love with Mayil. Believing that Sathyajith was the right person for her, Mayil fell in love with him, until she denied the opportunity to attend a teacher training course in Madras to stay with her. Despite loving Sathyajith, he does not allow her to sexually exploit her, which upsets her. Never intend to have a serious relationship with Mayil, he went on to where he came from to marry another woman. When Mayil begs Sathyajith not to leave him, he says he befriends her for pleasure - not marriage.

The sad Mayil admitted this to Guruvammal, who quickly planned to marry her to someone else. The Parattai village rulers - who are eager for Mayil - are spreading rumors about his relationship with Sathyajith. Because of this, Mayil's engagement plan was stopped and the village became unfriendly to her. Unable to endure the shame, Guruvammal died and left Chappani to take care of Mayil.

Chappani took good care of Mayil, encouraging him when he needed him. He warmed himself to Chappani, making him more confident and assertive and caring for him and his attitude, which surprised many in the village. Mayil tells him to slap anyone who calls him "Chappani" and only responds to those who call him by his name, Gopalakrishnan. When Sathyajith and Parattai called him "Chappani" despite his request to use his real name, Gopalakrishnan slapped them. Mayil and Gopalakrishnan celebrate his new courage. The persecuted Parattai then defeated Gopalakrishnan badly. Mayil rescued her, spat on Parattai for the brutal attack.

Mayil decides to marry Gopalakrishnan, and sends her to a nearby town to buy wedding supplies. Learning the absence of Gopalakrishnan, Parattai went to Mayil's house and tried to rape her. Gopalakrishnan returns to Mayil's house and begs Parattai to leave him. When Parattai refused, Gopalakrishnan killed him with stone and was captured. He promised Mayil that he would come back, and he waited every day for her.

Production

Development

16 Vayathinile is the directorial debut of P. Bharathiraja and his first scenario. Originally planned to be a black-and-white film titled Mayil and funded by India's National Film Development Company (NDFC), but according to Bharathiraja, the NFDC withdrew at the last minute without specifying a reason. The film was eventually taken by S. A. Rajkannu who produced it under the banner of Shri Amman Creations. Mayil finally renamed 16 Vayathinile , and the dialog was written by P. Kalaimani. P. S. Nivas was signed as a cinematographer, Somnath-Kamalasekharan as art director and R. Bhaskaran as editor. Chithra Lakshmanan and K. Bhagyaraj worked as assistant directors. The latter provides suggestions for scenes and dialogs.

Casting

Bharathiraja wants Lakshmanan to sign Kamal Haasan for Chappani's role, expects to pay Haasan INR 15,000 because the actor has received INR 17,000 for Aayirathil Oruthi (1975). When Haasan requested INR 30,000, Lakshmanan suggested that Bharathiraja offer the role to Sivakumar because the production unit could not pay for Haasan's request; However, Bharathiraja sees Haasan as an ideal choice and agrees to pay him INR 27,000. For his character, the actor grew his long curly hair and wore a long lung and khadi shirt. In the year 2017, Haasan recalled, "Years ago, a man dressed in dhoti and a dirty shirt came to my office to tell me a manuscript. If I changed the offer on the basis of his dirty clothes, I would never be here talking to After listening to the script, I realized that he was very genius and his movie was a classic 16 Vayathinile, and he was none other than Bharathiraja ace sir ". Bharathiraja also remembers that he showed "Kamal Haasan the handsome in a bad way" because he wanted to prove that the characters need not always be interesting, and break this stereotype in the film industry.

Rajinikanth was casted as villain of Parattai village. Bharathiraja stated in 2013 that despite having completed INR 3,000 as a salary for Rajinikanth after the last one initially charged INR 5,000, he finally paid INR 2,500 to he. A few years later, he stated that Rajinikanth's salary was lower than Kamal's salary because the former did not become an established star, but added that he was unsure about the exact details of the salary. 16 Vayathinile marks the first appearance of Rajinikanth in a color film. Since the actor was not fluent in Tamil at the time, Bhagyaraj read the lines and Rajinikanth repeated them until he mastered them.

Sridevi plays Mayil, after which the film was originally titled. For the role of Mayil's mother, Kuruvammal, Bharathiraja wanted someone who could speak the village dialect smoothly and chose Ganthimathi for his acting style. Receiving a salary INR 150, Bhagyaraj was initially considered for the role of veterinarian but wanted to concentrate on directing; Even so, he still appears as a cameo in the movie. The role of veterinarians goes to newcomer Shabbir Ahmed, who is named after Sathyajith's post-production screen. The scene was shot in ten days. Sathyajith was inexperienced in Tamil at the time of the audition. Comedian Goundamani plays a character named Koothu. Haasan, Sridevi, Rajinikanth and Gandhimathi are credited by the names of their characters in the opening credits, not their real names.

Filming

Shot mainly in Mysore and Kollegal, 16 Vayathinile is the first Tamil movie that is completely outdoors and no device is used. Due to budget constraints, the technical crew is unable to afford a camera that can film slow motion and Sridevi must run slowly for the song "Chendoora Poove". The scene where Mayil spat on Parattai takes several times before Rajinikanth insists that Sridevi really spits on him.

While Bharathiraja wanted the film to follow a linear narrative, it was Bhagyaraj's idea to start the film with a flashback sequence. After filming, the film is screened at least 20 times for the distributor and the narrative switches each time between linear and non-linear versions. Finally, Rajkannu himself released the movie, with a flashback narrative. Movie budget is INR 0.5 million (equivalent to INR 10.0 million or US $ 150,000 in 2017 ).

Themes

16 Vayathinile focuses on the Tamil Nadu countryside, and Mayil's vulnerability. Film critic Naman Ramachandran compares Parattai with the Rajinikanth character, Kondaji of Katha Sangama (1975), states, "As in the film, Rajinikanth is a garbage man who plays cards with his men." Just like the Thimmaraya character in < i> Katha Sangama performs duties for Kondaji, here Chappani/Gopalakrishnan performs services for Parattai, but the similarity ends there because Thimmaraya is evil and Chappani is good. "He also depicts 16 Vayathinile as a movie first when the evil character played by Rajinikanth has no change of heart or goes unpunished: "Here he pays for his deeds with his life."

According to Kamal, the film was inspired by the 1970 drama of David Lean, Ryan's Daughter . Swarnavel filmmaker Eswaran Pillai notes that the film is characterized by "ambiguous and dark protagonists, new subjectivities, [and] cliché evasion and cathartic closure." Kumuthan Maderya, writing for Jump Cut, describes 16 Vayathiniles as a "neo-nativity" film - a story made in the Tamil Nadu countryside, capturing the rough and photographing the lives of the villagers. Ashis Nandy, in his 1998 book The Secret Politics of Our Desires, notes that doctors in Tamil films such as Vayathinile are always seen with "a little suspicion" and remain complete outsiders "capable seduce women and pollute the community ".

Music

The soundtrack album and background score for 16 Vayathinile was composed by Ilaiyaraaja with lyrics by Kannadasan, Gangai Amaran and Alangudi Somu. Ilaiyaraaja, in an April 2015 interview with Maalai Malar , stated that Kannadasan receives a salary starting from INR 1,000 to INR 1,500. Ilaiyaraaja asked Kannadasan to receive INR 750 citing the limitations of the film budget, as approved by Kannadasan. The album was released on EMI Records.

16 Vayathinile is Ilaiyaraaja's first collaboration with Kamal. Bharathiraja insisted that Rajkannu met with Ilaiyaraaja, although Rajkannu doubted if Ilaiyaraaja would register since he became famous after his movie debut Represent (1976). Ilaiyaraaja initially refused because of previous bets with Bharathiraja that Ilayaraaja's mentor, G. K. Venkatesh, would compose music for Bharathiraja's first film. Venkatesh then insisted that Ilaiyaraaja wrote music.

Although Ilaiyaraaja wanted S. P Balasubrahmanyam to sing "Chavanthi Poo" and "Aattukkutti", the singer experienced pharyngitis at the time and was replaced by Vasudevan Malaysia. "Chavanthi Poo", the first recorded song, was first written by Kannadasan for the film. Gangai Amaran made his debut as a lyricist with "Chendoora Poove". Ilaiyaraaja also debuted as a singer with this movie by singing the number "Solam Vidhaikkaiyile", although it did not appear on the soundtrack. According to Baradwaj Rangan film critic, "Chendoora Poove" uses the Viennese music trophy. B. Kolappan from The Hindu writes that the song "uses a violin rush to set the intro to the melody of the people who follow." The term "Chendoora Poove", which refers to the flower, was created by the Warrant because there is no interest with that name.

The album, a mix of classical folk and Western music, was praised by critics, and "Aattukkutti" shaped the popularity of Vasudevan. On "Chendoora Poove", B. Kolappan writes, "The genius of the maestro is most evident in its ability to combine infinite forms." Tribune describes "Chendoora Poove" as "a silver lined melody that plays a movie and adds to its brilliance." Do not miss it at any cost. " P. K. Ajith Kumar from The Hindu praised Janaki's vocals in "Chendoora Poove", saying the song "will not sound special in other sounds". Oinam Bedajit Metei, author of the article The Effect of Cross Cultural Flow on National Integration through Bollywood musicals: An Analytical Study , praised the song for offering "insight into the variation and diversity in [Janaki]" sound. He also praised his picturisation. The movie songs were remastered in a six-channel DTS 5.1 audio by A. Muthusamy of Honey Bee Music in June 2013.

Ramachandran praised Haasan's performance. declared in 1983, "[Kamal Haasan] by his own youth has for many years in front of him to decorate the Tamil and Hindu screens, and go with his prowess in Pathinaru Vayathinile, can, replace [Sivaji Ganesan] with the passage of time ".

In 2007, Rediff called the Vayathinile "new genre of pastoral film, which corresponds to village life in characterization, costume and dialect". The Times of India states that it "showcased [s] the best of superstar [Rajinikanth] and universal hero [Kamal Haasan]". Legacy

I am the first fan [Bharathiraja]... These are not empty words. Before the release of 16 Vayathinile , when she showed me the movie, I wrote her a letter of appreciation. That's why I say that I am his first fan and proud to be so.

16 Vayathinile is considered a heretical film and landmark in Tamil cinema, deviating from traditional Tamil films of the time. By , this film is a trendsetter for realistic rural life portrayal, and makes Haasan superstars, Rajinikanth and Sridevi, and enhances Goundamani's popularity. According to Naman Ramachandran and S. Shiva Kumar of The Hindu , Haasan's appearance is considered as a tour de force by critics because he is typecast as a romantic hero at the time. Dialogue "Idhu Eppadi Irukku?" ("How is this?"), Spoken by Parattai, became very popular; IANS and Rediff put it on the list of lines popularized by Rajinikanth. Manisha Lakhe, writing for Forbes India , notes that 16 Vayathinile "paved the way for unkempt criminals who have a very disgusting laugh." Remastered digital movie version is planned for late 2013 release; although the trailer was released in October of that year, the version has not seen a theatrical release in 2016.

In July 2007, S. R. Ashok Kumar of Hindu asked eight Tamil directors to list their favorite movies of all time in Tamil; seven - C.Ã, V. Sridhar, K. Balachander, J. Mahendran, K. Bhagyaraj, Mani Ratnam, K. S. Ravikumar and AmeerÃ, - named 16Ã, Vayathinile . According to Ratnam, the film was "memorable for its script, high standards and realism." South Scope including Kamal's appearance on "Kamal's best performing" list in July 2010. S. Shiva Kumar from The Hindu filed the film on her list in December 2010 "Electrifying Rajinikanth - Haasan Haasan movie "with Moondru Mudichu (1976), Avargal (1977) and Aval Appadithan (1978). In April 2013 CNN-News18 put the film on the "100 greatest Indian films of all time" list, saying it was "a decisive step of studio production and paving the way for successful integration of subaltern and people's themes". "In December 2014, The Times of India included 16 Vayathinile on the list of" 12 top Rajinikanth movies ". In August 2015, CNN-IBN put the film on the "10 performances that make [Sridevi] 'Last Empress' from Indian cinema". In November of the same year, Daily News and Analysis included the film in the "Movies you should watch to understand Kamas Haasan's broadcast list". Actors Vijay Sethupathi and Vikram include 16 Vayathiniles among their favorite films. After seeing the film, director K. Balachander writes in a letter of appreciation to Bharathiraja, "You have hit the bull's eye".

Vayathinile was fabricated in Murattu Kaalai by Vivek, whose character Saroja was called "Mayil" by the character of Cell Murugan (a veterinarian similar to the character of Sathyajith in the film). In Sivaji (2007), Vivek's character gave one of his slogans and finished saying: "Idhu eppadi irukku?" . Title and movie characters have inspired other movie titles: Parattai Engira Azhagu Sundaram (2007), Mayuru (2012) and 36 Vayadhinile (2015). In Nayaki (2016) "Chendoora Poove" is often hummed by Trisha's character, Gayathri.
