The Tata Nano is a compact city car manufactured by Tata Motors that is manufactured and sold primarily in India. Nano was originally launched at the price of one lakh rupee or INR 100,000 (US $ 1,500), which has increased over time. In 2018, Cyrus Mistry called Tata Nano a failed project, with production stopping since May 2018.
Designed to appeal to India's growing middle class of motorcycles, it receives a lot of publicity, but can not sell enough cars to prove profitable. Some problems such as factory relocation from Singur, instances of Nano catching fire, and Nano perceptions become unsafe and less qualified because cost cutting leads to a decrease in sales volume. Compared to Tata Motors' aspirations of 250,000 units of sales each year at launch, sales in FY 2016-17 are only 7591 units. The car is a product that makes a loss to Tata Motors as revealed by former chairman of Tata Sons, Cyrus Mistry and confirmed by the current management of Tata Motors.
In 2017, Tata Motors said it will continue to try to produce cars for some time because of the product's emotional relationship with Tata Group, although there is no demand for its production.

Histori
After successfully launching a low-cost Tata Ace truck in 2005, Tata Motors embarked on an affordable car development that will appeal to many Indians riding motorcycles. The purchase price of the no-frills car is brought down by removing most of the non-essential features, reducing the amount of steel used in its construction, and relying on low-cost Indian labor. Non-essential features include, passenger side mirrored displacement, has one eraser blade, has only three wheel nuts per wheel, removal of fuel filler cap from fuel tank and no air conditioner.
The introduction of Nano received a lot of media attention because of the low price of 1 lakh rupee (Rs 100,000).
Expectations and effects
Expectations made for the car during the run until the production may not match the realized success. A 2008 study, by the Indian rating agency CRISIL, thinks Nano will expand the national car market by 65%, but, by the end of 2012, news reports have detailed a disappointing response from Indian consumers against the offer; sales in the first two fiscal years after the car's opening remained steady at around 70,000 units although Tata seems intent on maintaining its capacity to produce cars in much larger quantities, around 250,000 per year, if necessary.
It is anticipated that the 2009 debut will greatly affect the used car market, and prices are down 25-30% before launch. Sales of the nearest Nano competitor, Maruti 800, fell 20% immediately after the Nano opening. It is not known whether the Nano has a lasting effect on prices and requests for a close replacement. In July 2012, Tata Group chairman Ratan Tata, who retired in January 2014, said that the car has enormous potential in developing countries while acknowledging that early opportunities are wasted due to initial problems.
Disposal of Singur factory
Tata Motors announced in 2006 that the Nano will be produced in Singur, West Bengal. Local farmers immediately began to protest the forced acquisition of their newly planted land. Tata first delayed the launch of the Nano and then decided to build a car in a different country, Gujarat, instead.

Price
Announced as the most affordable production car in the world, Tata aims at the price of one lakh rupee, or INR 100,000, which is roughly $ 2,000 US at the time. Only the first customer can buy a car for that price, and by 2017, the price for the base Nano starts around INR 215,000. Increased material costs may be the cause of this rapid price increase.
Compared to the Volkswagen Beetle, the price is relatively cheap, although it is still high in terms of the average salary of Indian workers/industrial farmers. In 1990, a Beetle from Mexican factories was priced at $ 5,300, about $ 9,928 in today's money. Ford Model T's initial price is about $ 850, equivalent to $ 23,151 today. Nano price just higher than Price corrected from Briggs & amp; Stratton Flyer with Flyer for US $ 125 ($ 1,767 in 2016), though the Flyer today is hardly considered a go kart.
The second-generation Nano is expected to be sold in the United States by 2015. The original Nano is not legal in the US, and can not be legally sold as a gray market import until 2034, when the original model 2009 received a 25- year exemption from US Customs and Border Protection. Although already available dealer network in US through Jaguar Land Rover division of Tata, Tata Motors will not use Jaguar Land Rover to sell Nano.
Cost-cutting features
The Nano design applies many actions to reduce production costs.
Comparison with Maruti 800, the closest competitor of Tata Nano:
Technical specifications
The Nano (2012) is a 38 PS (28 kW; 37 hp) car with a 624 cc two-cylinder engine mounted on the rear of the car. This car meets the Indian Emission Standards Bharat Stage 4, which is roughly equivalent to Euro 4.
Nano developments led to 31 designs and 37 technology patents filed.
Alternative powerplan
The Nano is driven by a gasoline engine. Although some variants are proposed, nothing is put into production. Upscale versions are shown in autoshow.
Air compression machine
Tata Motors signed an agreement in 2007 with French company, Motor Development International, to manufacture Nano pressed air cars. While the vehicle should be able to travel about 200 kilometers (120 million) at US $ 3 of electricity to compress the air, the Vice President of System Engineering asserts at the end of 2009 that vehicle coverage continues to be a problem.
Electric vehicles
Tata has discussed the possibility of producing an electric version, and when showing off a Nano electric vehicle at the Geneva Motor Show 2010, there are no such cars on the market.
If the EV Nano is sold, it is expected to be a very affordable electric car, using lithium-ion batteries, and has a range of 80 miles (130 km). A Norwegian electric car specialist, MiljÃÆ'øbil Grenland AS, has been appointed as the supposed partner in the project.
Bi-fuel variant
Emax Nano CNG launched in October 2013. It can be run with gasoline or compressed natural gas. Initially, it will be sold in Delhi and parts of Maharashtra and Lucknow, where CNG is available at fuel outlets.
Super Super Nano
In December 2014, Coimbatore-based JA Motorsport presents 1.3-liter 1.3-liter versions of the Nano called 'Super Nano' at the Autocar Performance Show. Featuring a full body kit, slick tires, roll-on roll cage, and smoked heads and taillamps, Super Nano features carbon fiber components, Recaro seats, and paddle shifters mounted on the steering wheel.
Export Europe
An upscale Nano concept car called Europa is featured at the 2009 Geneva Motor Show. However, there has been no progress in producing or marketing these high-end specifications.
Car fire
There have been reports of fire incidents involving Nano. The company denied they were connected to the design of the car or its parts and blamed "foreign power equipment" found on top of the exhaust system. The company offers retrofit exhaust and electrical systems but refuses to recall those cars. Tata extends the warranty on cars, including those already sold, from 18 months to four years in early December 2010.
Reception
The Nano receives mixed receipts from Indian consumers, the reasons given include that it is still too expensive compared to motorcycles, and the waiting time is extended for delivery (several months). Although identified as the most affordable car, used cars are more expensive when new gives more social status; The Nano is considered a "poor man" vehicle, getting some people away. Fires and other security issues are also a concern.
Tata Motors ended FY16 selling 21,012 Nanos, up from 16,901 in FY15.
Security crash
In 2014, a Nano falls for NCAP by ADAC in Germany. Although Tata claims that they are expecting 4 stars, the Nano gets no stars for lack of adult protection and does not meet UN basic safety requirements.
Sales
At the time of the launch of Tata Motors is planned to sell 250,000 units per year. Maximum sales ever achieved were 74,527 units during FY 2011-2012 and then sales declined rapidly year-over-year leading to negligible car market share in segment "A". This product may be removed as soon as the dealer stops ordering.
