Mobil konsep
Jeep showed off a concept car named Commander during the 1999 car show series. The concept features an experimental direct-methanol fuel cell that generates electricity to charge nickel-metal hydride batteries. The full-time four wheel drive is performed by a heavy duty electric motor on each shaft. The suspension can be raised 4 inches (102 mm) to traverse off-road destinations. The overall style affects the development of the third generation Grand Cherokee which at that time is six years away. The concept car has the same height as Grand Cherokees production, but about 8 inches (203 mm) wider. It allows the interior to feature an extra wide center console in front and three bucket seats in the second row. The Commander's concept has nothing to do with SUV production.

Production
The production version of Jeep Commander (XK and XH-powered diesel export version) debuted at the 2005 New York Auto Show as a five or seven-passenger partner for the third generation Jeep Grand Cherokee. It was developed to target consumers who wanted a three-row seat, but was designed to be just two inches longer than the existing Grand Cherokee with two rows of seats and to be assembled on the same production line.
It shares its unibody construction, a short front suspension/long independent arm and a 5-link live rear axle with the Grand Cherokee that became its base. It features a vertical windshield and square sides. The roof is down disguised by a roof rack; design similar to GMC Envoy XL and Chevrolet TrailBlazer EXT. This allows the second and third row seats to be installed higher than the first row seats.

Standard features include: electronic stability control, traction control, electronic roll mitigation, back up sensors, immobilizer, dual-stage front and side curtain airbags, TPMS, power heating mirrors, remote keyless entry, automatic headlights, UConnect infotainment system and full size backup wheel. In Europe and some other markets such as Chile, South Africa, and South Korea, the Commander offers the Diesel V6 engine.
Off-Road Capability
Commander is offered with three different four-wheel drive systems: Quadra-Trac I, Quadra-Trac II, and Quadra-Drive II. Quadra-Trac I am available on models equipped with a 3.7 L engine; this is a full time system that does not require driver input. Quadra-Trac II is available on models equipped with V8 engines; it is a full time system as well but adds low range as well as neutral position for towing. Quadra-Drive II expands on Quadra-Trac II by adding a limited electronic slip differential to the front and rear axles. When equipped with Quadra-Drive II, slip plates for fuel tanks, front suspension, and transfer boxes are also added.

Termination
The Jeep commander was terminated after the 2010 model. Chrysler announced that Dodge Durango 2011 would be his successor; which was produced alongside its 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee mate platform at the Jefferson North Assembly in Detroit, Michigan.
In 2017, Jeep released a three-line concept vehicle based on the Jeep Cherokee (KL) platform for the Chinese market, called Jeep Yuntu , utilizing a plug-in gasoline/electric hybrid power train.
The three-line version of the Jeep Cherokee (KL) with a slightly modified style was released exclusively for the Chinese market named Jeep Grand Commander. Though the size is the same as the original Commander, the Great Commander will offer a four-cylinder power. It will not be sold in other markets.
Jeep is currently planning a successor to the Commander for the North American market, which may be named Jeep Grand Wagoneer. Under the Ram 1500 platform, a new vehicle will be built in Warren, Michigan and will share production with possible Dodge Ramcharger successors as well. The new vehicle, which was first shown to Jeep dealers at a dealership meeting in 2017, will be released in 2019.
