Premise
Thomas Sullivan Magnum IV is a private detective played by Tom Selleck. He lives in a guest house of a 200 acres (81 ha) beach property called Sarang Robin, in Hawaii, at the invitation of its owner, Robin Masters, the famous but never-seen author of several dozen spooky novels. As if this is a quid pro quo for Magnum service based on its expertise in security; pilots and some early episodes showed Magnum had done Masters help, probably when the Masters hired him for a case. The voice of Robin Masters, which only sounds several times per season, is provided by Orson Welles (the last "appearance" given by different actor, Reid Crandell).
Magnum lives a luxurious life on the estate and operates as P.I. in suitable cases. The only thorn in the near-perfect lifestyle is Jonathan Quayle Higgins III, played by John Hillerman. As a former British Army Major Sergeant, he was on the stern, "by-book" surface of Robin's Nest, whose rigorous ways often contradicted the easier-to-use Magnum method. He patrols in Robin's Nest with his two "youth" trained, Doberman Pinschers named Zeus and Apollo. Magnum has the free use of guest houses and cars, the Ferrari 308 GTS Quattrovalvole , but as a funny side in various episodes, often have to negotiate with Higgins to use residential facilities such as tennis courts, wine cellars and expensive cameras.
The relationship between Magnum and Higgins was at first cool, but as the series progressed, unspoken respect and joy grew between the two. Many episodes dedicate more screen time to these "weird" couples after the relationship proves popular with fans. The recurring theme during the last two seasons, starting on the "Paper War" episode, involves Magnum's suspicion that Higgins is actually a Robin Masters since he opened Robin's letter, summoned Robin Ferrari "his car" and so on. This suspicion is neither proven nor denied. , although at least one episode of Higgins is shown alone in a room, picking up the phone rings and talking to Robin Masters, indicating they are two different people.
In addition to Higgins, Magnum's two major companions on the islands are Theodore Calvin "T.C." (Roger E. Mosley), who runs a local helicopter charter service called "Hoppers Island", and often finds himself being persuaded by Magnum to fly it during various cases, and Orville Wilbur Richard "Rick" Wright (Larry Manetti), who refuses to use the name given by Orville and who the owner of the local bar. In the pilot episode, this is "Rick's Place" in the city, inspired by Casablanca, with Rick appearing in the appropriate 1930s outfit. After completing the test, the executives feel that the audience will not be able to fully connect with this element. Instead, Rick moved to manage the fancy Kamehameha club, beachfront, which has an exclusive membership and Higgins on the board of directors. Magnum often strolls around the club, using its facilities and running unpaid tabs, further triggering the Magnum-Higgins feud.
T.C. and Rick are both former marines of VMO-2 with whom Magnum, a former Navy SEAL and Navy Intelligence officer, served in the Vietnam War. The series is one of the first to deal with Vietnam veterans as "human" and not as a killer bombarded with shock, and praised by many former troop members for doing so. Magnum often deceives or bribes T.C. and Rick in assisting him in his cases, greatly frustrated them, although the deep friendship among the group, including Higgins, proved to be one of the key elements of the program during his eight seasons.
Magnum comes and goes as he pleases, only works when he wants it, and has almost unlimited use of Ferrari and many other luxuries from the plantation. He keeps a mini-refrigerator with an unlimited supply of beer ("Old DÃÆ'üsseldorf in the long neck"), wearing his precious Rolex GMT Master watches and surrounded by countless beautiful women who are often the victims of crime, his clients, or connected with various other ways for the case he overcame.

Tema musik
The original musical theme for the credit opening of the pilot episode is a mid-tempo piece jazzy by Ian Freebairn-Smith. This music is also used for the next nine regular episodes.

A longer version of this second theme ("Theme from Magnum PI", recorded at 3:25) is credited to the Post released as a 7 inch single by Elektra Records in 1982 and displayed on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in the same year, peaking at No. 1. 25 on May 8, 1982. Development
Development of Magnum, P.I. originally scheduled at ABC, which aired other Glen Larson series The Hardy Boys/Nancy Drew Mysteries and Battlestar Galactica . However, in January 1979, ABC canceled both series, and development at Magnum, P.I. . Larson then took the series to CBS.
Selleck's contract commitment to the Magnum, PI series famously weighed on the role of Indiana Jones in the first Indiana Jones movie Raiders of the Lost Ark , which went to Harrison Ford. Selleck can not take part of Jones as the Magnum will begin filming in March 1980. Due to AFTRA/Screen Actors Guild Guild 1980, production of Magnum was delayed until December 1980, which will allow Selleck to play Jones.
