Histori

The original house dates from the early 17th century when it was known as Caen Wood House. Orangery was added in about 1700. In 1754, the orange was bought by William Murray, the 1st Earl of Mansfield. He commissioned Robert Adam to overhaul him from 1764-1779. Adam added the library (one of his most famous interiors) to balance oranges, and added an Ionic porch at the entrance. In 1793-6 George Saunders added two wings on the north side, and the office and building of the kitchen and brewery (now the restaurant) to the side.

The 2nd Earl and Countess of Mansfield add milk to supply Kenwood House with milk and cheese. After two years of negotiations, the 6th Earl of Mansfield rented the house to Grand Duke Michael Mikhailovich who was exiled from Russia and his wife, Countess Sophie from Merenberg in 1910.

Lord Iveagh, a wealthy Anglo-Irish businessman and philanthropist (from the Guinness family), bought the house from the Mansfield family in 1925 and handed it over to his people in 1927; opened to the public in 1928. The furniture had been sold at the time, but some furniture had been bought back. The paintings are from the Iveagh collection. Part of the land was bought by the Kenwood Preservation Council in 1922, after a threat that it would be sold to build. By 2017, 143,490 people visit the house.

Estate

This plantation has a landscape designed with gardens near the house, probably originally designed by Humphry Repton, in contrast to some of the surrounding forests, and the naturalistic Hampstead Heath in the south. There is also a new park by Arabella Lennox-Boyd.

The estate is Grade II * listed in the List of Historic Parks and Gardens. One-third of the plantation is the Site of Special Scientific Interest, especially the ancient forest. It is home to many birds and insects and the lazy Pipistrelle in London.

There are statues by Barbara Hepworth, Henry Moore and EugÃÆ'¨ne Dodeigne in the garden near the house.

Music concerts, originally classical but in recent years pop-dominated concerts, held by lakes on Saturday evenings every summer from 1951 to 2006, attract thousands of people for picnics and enjoy spectacular music, scenery and fireworks. In February 2007, the English Heritage decided to leave this concert due to the restrictions placed on them after protests from several local residents. On March 19, 2008, it was announced that the concert will return to a new location in Padang Grassland inside the Kenwood Estate, with a limited number of concerts up to eight per season.

The house was closed for major renovations from 2012 until the end of 2013.

Most of the works were acquired by Iveagh in the 1880s and 1890s and are largely portraits of Old Man, the landscape and works of Dutch and 17th-century Flemish and British artists. The others are not part of the Iveagh Heritage but added to the collection after his death because of his relationship with Kenwood House.

There is also a collection of shoe buckles, jewelry and miniature portraits.

In 2012, an exhibition of works from art collections, Rembrandt, Van Dyck, Gainsborough: The Treasures of Kenwood House, London began a museum tour in the United States while Kenwood House was undergoing renovations; many of them never exist outside the UK. The exhibition opens June 6, 2013 in Little Rock, Arkansas at Arkansas Arts Center.
