Suicide door - Wikipedia

"Suicide " is a slang term for car doors hinged on the back rather than in front. Such doors were originally used on horse-drawn carriages, but are rarely found in modern vehicles, especially as they are widely considered unsafe.

Popularized in custom car trades, the term is avoided by major automobile manufacturers that support alternatives such as "Rolls-Royce" doors, "FlexDoors" (Opel), "freestyle doors" (Mazda), "rear access doors" (Saturn ), and "hinged back door" (preferred technical term).

History

Suicide doors are commonly used on cars manufactured in the first half of the 20th century. This nickname is primarily due to a design tendency to seriously injure a person who goes out or enters the offside of a car if the door is struck by a passing vehicle. Also, in an era before the seatbelt, the unintentional opening of the doors meant that there was a greater risk of falling out of the vehicle compared to the front-hinged door, where the airflow pushed the closed door rather than opening it further. The suicide door is very popular with mafia in the gangster era of the 1930s, purportedly because of the ease of pushing passengers out of moving vehicles, according to Dave Brownell, former editor of Hemmings Motor News.

After World War II, the use of suicide doors was largely confined to the back door of a four-door sedan. The most famous use of suicide doors on American post World War II cars is the Lincoln Continental 4 door convertible and sedan (1961-1969) and Ford Thunderbird 1967-1971 four-door sedan. The British Rover P4 cars also used the back doors of suicide until their destruction in 1964. German goggomobil saloons and coupes had two body doors with suicide doors, until this was changed to swing-front in 1964.

The modern usage

Due to increased security issues, the last mass-produced car model with an independently-opened suicide door sold in the United States is a four-door Ford Thunderbird sedan from 1967 to 1971. Similarly, the last mass-produced pickup truck with such doors is Toyota Tundra from 2000 to 2002. In 2003, the new Rolls-Royce Phantom (sold in the UK) reintroduced independent suicide doors in luxury vehicle applications. Other luxury models with classic suicide doors include the Spyker D8 and a four-seat Rolls-Royce Phantom Drophead Coupe convertible. However, the latest mass production model with such doors is the Rolls-Royce Phantom Series II that was introduced in 2012.

In recent years, the back door of suicide that can not be opened until the front door is unlocked has appeared in a number of vehicles, including a long cab truck pickup, Saturn SC, Saturn Ion QuadCoupe, Honda Element, Toyota FJ Cruiser, BMW i3 and Mazda RX- 8.

The rear passenger suicide door has long been used on the Austin FX4 tricycle. Their successors, TX1 TX2 and TX4, did not have it. In 2018, LEVC introduced the TXe which has a passenger rear door.

Some concept cars have features of suicide doors, such as the Lincoln C, B-without-pillar hatchback and rear door suicide, or Carbon Motors Corporation E7, police cars with suicide back doors designed to help officers get cuffed passengers in and out of seats back. Kia Naimo, the electric concept car, also has a suicide back door.

Other car manufacturers who have produced models with suicide doors include CitroÃÆ'¡n, Lancia, Opel, Panhard, Rover, Saab, Saturn ,? Koda, and Volkswagen.

Benefits

The rear hinged door makes getting in and out of the vehicle easier, allowing passengers to come in by turning to sit and exit by stepping forward and exiting. In combination with a traditional front door, they allow easier access of chauffeurs to the back door. In the Austin FX4 taxi, the driver can reach the rear door handle through the driver's window without getting out of the vehicle.

In addition, the rear hinged door also allows a better position for the person who puts the child seat into the rear seat of the vehicle than the conventional door, while simpler and cheaper to build than the sliding door commonly used on MPV. However, the latest MPV in the compact MPV class with such doors has been introduced by Opel Meriva B in 2010.

The front-hinged front-door combination and hinged rear doors allow for a B-B-shaped design, creating large openings for entry and exit of the vehicle as seen in the photo above.

Disadvantages

When the front door is bordered directly by the back door of suicide, getting in and out of the vehicle can be strange if people try to use the front and back door at the same time.

There are also a number of security hazards:

  • In case of someone, when getting out of the car from the driver's side, forget to see the traffic coming from the back of the vehicle, if the door hit by a vehicle, then the door will hit the passenger, causing serious injury. Whereas in the case of a front-hinged door, the door swings forward, reducing the chance of a passenger injury.
  • Passengers falling from a moving vehicle may be exposed to a door
  • The aerodynamic factor that forced the rear-hinged door to open at a speed in the old model like the Subaru 360. In 1969, Consumer Reports reported this issue on the Subaru 360.

In recent years, car companies have overcome this danger with safety features like seat belts, and locks that require an open front-hinged door before allowing a hinged door on the back to open.
