A storefront or storefront is the facade or entrance of a retail store located on the ground floor or street level of a commercial building, usually including one or more view windows. A storefront serves to draw the visual attention to the business and its merchandise.
Prior to the mid-19th century, storefronts had no large display windows, but often included features such as awnings and bay windows to attract passers-by. Modern storefronts with window displays developed in the mid-century after the casting of architectural iron became widely available and glass manufacturers began to produce large glass panels at relatively low cost.
Storefront commercial buildings are often substantially altered even when other architectural elements remain intact. Such changes may affect the architectural character and history of historic buildings.
E-commerce websites are sometimes called "online stores" or "virtual storefronts."
