History

Agriculture was finally introduced, and there are still signs of this early occupation in the area. Fort Walton Culture members build a ceremonial mound at Fort Walton Beach.

Destin is named after Leonard Destin, New London, a Connecticut fisherman captain who settled in the area between 1845 and 1850. Geography

The city is located on a peninsula that separates the Gulf of Mexico from Choctawhatchee Bay. The peninsula was originally an island; hurricanes and sea level changes gradually connect the island to the mainland.

Destin is close to several other cities in the region. The town of Fort Walton Beach is located west of the inlet of Santa Rosa Sound to Choctawhatchee Bay. North Destin, across the bay is Niceville, with the Mid-Bay Bridge connecting the two by road. Panama City (east) and Pensacola (to the west) are each about 50 miles (80 km) away.

At the western end of the peninsula is East Pass (also known as Destin Pass), separating it from Santa Rosa Island to the west. East Pass is the only Choctawhatchee Bay outlet to the Gulf of Mexico, Many sources claim that the inflows are dug by hand with a widening water flow within hours. An early pass appears (at the end of the East of Destin Harbor) on the original map and survey of Spanish, French and British surveyors, such as Thomas Jefferys 1775 map The Coast of West Florida and Louisiana . Dredging is often required to keep the East Pass navigable.

"Crab Island," are actually two islands made of sand that the Engineer Corps of Engineers dredged from the East Pass. These islands are large enough to inhabit seaweeds, small bushes and nesting seabirds. It has been reduced to a significant sand dune, which only appears when the waves come out. It has become a popular port in the area. Entrance to Destin Harbor, the lagoon between the beach and the main body in the western part of the peninsula, lies to the north of the East Pass pier. The lagoon is formed by the spit sand named Holiday Isle; many condos have been built along the harbor since the 1970s.

According to the US Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 8.2 square miles (21 km 2 ), of which 7.5 square miles (19 km 2 ) is ground and 0.6 square miles (1.6 km 2 ) (7.95%) is water. Destin is located on 30 Â ° 23? 36? N 86 Â ° 28? 31? W .
