src: c1.staticflickr.com

The Subaru Impreza (second generation) is a compact car manufactured between 2000 and 2007 by Subaru in Ota, Gunma, Japan.

Like its predecessor generation, Subaru splits the range into a four-door sedan (GD series) and five-door hatchback (GG series) body variants; the company did not forward the coupe style before. The mainstream versions receive naturally aspired 4-inch, 1.6-, 2.0-, or 2.5-liter engines, with enhanced performance-oriented "WRX" and "WRX STI" models to versions that have the last two options. Like most Subaru models of the same vintage, all-wheel drive tends to be offered as standard in the export market, with front-wheel drive also available in Japan.

Introduced as a "New Age" Impreza, styling polarization headlamps share the criticism that quickly points to the model as the Impreza's "bug eye". A subsequent facelift in 2002 softened this frontal styling, but the second facelift in 2005 - characterized by a three-part inspired flight mesh grille - also attracted controversy.

Histori

Pra-facelift: 2000-2002

Built on a significant modified version of the first generation platform, the new Impreza follows many of the same formulas as its predecessor, including the same contoured silhouette. Nonetheless, front-end styling - differentiated by ovoid headlamps - attracts significant controversy. The body dimension for the sedan increases by 45 millimeters (1.8 inches), width 40 millimeters (1.6 inches), and 25 millimeters (1.0 inches) tall; wheelbase increased by 5 millimeters (0.2 inches). To meet the Japanese vehicle size tax regulations, the hatchback width increased by only 5 millimeters (0.2 inches) to 1.695 millimeters (66.7 inches) and therefore remained within the "5" classification limits. Since Subaru intends to homologate the sedan chassis for the rally, the decision to increase the width of the sedan - which puts it into the higher "3" tax division - brings additional stability. Likewise, a 20-millimeter (0.8 inch) increase for the sedan also works to aid handling, with the hatchback only gaining 5 millimeters (0.2 inches). Other major improvements to the chassis include a 120 percent increase in torsional rigidity; mainly due to revisions in the design of the front subframe. The suspension retains the base of the MacPherson strut in front and rear, though Subaru alters the geometry.

The GD chassis gets nearly 200 kilograms (441 Â £) weight above the GC chassis. Subaru's claims are compared to the previous model, the GD chassis is 148 percent and 82 percent more rigid in torsional rigidity and beam, respectively. This stiffness is mainly due to the addition of a "ring" of steel that surrounds the cabin on the B-pillar. While the stiffness is enhanced for passenger safety, it has the added benefit of providing more stability for motor sport events. Firehouse Magazine noted that Jaws of Life needs to cut off the B subaru pillar at certain points to cut the car frame. In terms of security, the GD chassis scored much higher than the GC chassis and earned the "Good" rating (highest mark) of the IIHS offset collision test. Front driver 4 stars, 5 star front passenger, and 4 star safety rating from NHTSA.

At the Subaru Japan home market, the Impreza range starts with 1.5i - powered by a 1.5-liter SOHC EJ15 engine and paired with optional manual or automatic transmissions. The Subaru features a DOHC version of the same engine to the automatic 1.5R only, which also features an active valve control system. For both models, front and all-wheel drive versions are available. Starting 2006, Subaru turns off the EJ15 machine to support the new EL15 .

Subaru released the next-generation Impreza to North America in 2001 for the 2002 model year. The release of the 169-kW (2.00-liter turbocharged Impreza WRX) did not happen until the 2002 model, and the Impreza WRX STI was postponed until model year 2004. The US version of the STI includes various departures from Japanese and European counterparts, such as a 2.5-liter turbocharged EJ257 engine, rather than a dual 2.0-liter turbo engine sold elsewhere. All 2006 American Imprezas use some 2.5 liter engine type EJ25 because naturally aspirated and turbocharged are available.

Outback Sport was sold in Australia for the 2001-2007 model, but was renamed RV Impreza with the same color scheme as the American version. The Australian version has a dual-range manual transmission, not available in the United States. The Impreza was Wheels Car of the Year magazine for 2000.

First facelift: 2002-2005

After a mixed reaction to the design of the round lamp, in 2001 Subaru requested the assistance of Peter Stevens of Prodrive, who renewed the car fascia in 2002 (2003 in the US for the 2004 model), with rectangular headlights. For the US market, the Impreza facelifted is offered as 2.5 RS Sedan and TS Wagon, 2.5 Outback Sport Wagon, WRX Sedan and Wagon, and the new WRX STI Sedan. The Sport Package is optional for RS, and WRX can be ordered with Premium Package. RS, TS, Outback Sport, and WRX are available with manual or automatic transmissions, while a single transmission for STI is a 6-speed manual. This Impreza version earned the nickname 'Blob Eye' among Subaru fans.

In 2005, Subaru made their AVCS standard on all the machines used in the Impreza.

Secondary Facelift: 2005-2007

From June 2005 in Japan (2006 model year) Imprezas has been redesigned, along with new headlights, rear lights, and bumpers. Greek designer Andreas Zapatinas, former Alfa Romeo, wrote an updated front-end in 2004. Facelift introduces the company's new face of Subaru, including the controversial "jet intake and wing" grille design that first appeared in the Subaru R2 kei car. The faces of the new company are designed to pay homage to the roots of their aircraft manufacture, Nakajima Aircraft Company. This Impreza version earned the nickname 'Hawk Eye' among Subaru fans.

WRX

In December 2000, Subaru updated WRX to the second generation. The GDA WRX model also maintains a 5-speed manual transmission gearbox design from GC8. Subaru then released a new 6-speed gearbox for the significantly stronger STi GDB model.

GD chassis along with WRX and STI experience two styling changes in its lifecycle. The original style applied to A and B. Initially this design proved to be somewhat unpopular which encouraged a more conventional design to apply C, D and E models. The second facelift is applied to F and G versions.

WRX STi obtains 17 "x 7.5" wheels on the previous 16 "x 7" wheels. The 5-speed manual transmission (which is considered to be one of the car's weak points) is transformed into an engineered 6-speed manual transmission STI. The machine is maintained from Version 6 STI and still retains the semi-closed deck block and is still labeled as EJ207, but the engine does not get Variable Valve Timing (AVCS) further increasing their low-end torque production. Interior updated with STi logo on gauge. STi tachometer also has a red shift lamp. STi STi ST and the selected type has received Brembo 4 piston front brakes and 2 piston rear brakes while the bare-bones STi Type still carries the Subaru 4 piston front and 2 rear brake pistons. Externally, the STI has a larger hood spoon and has a foglight cover with STi embossed on it. The DCCD has been updated so it can work with anti-lock brakes. When braking, when ABS is on, DCCD will set itself to open mode (no locking).

Nomenclature version derived from the name. Japanese and other automotive enthusiasts often refer to the chassis as GDB/GDF (STi has 'B' or 'F' (for USDM model) whereas regular WRX has 'A'). The fourth character of VIN gives a revision (A to F where G is the 2007 version).

In 2000, most of Asia, Oceania and Europe received new STIs. The machine was extinguished to meet emission standards. The engine output varies from 265 PS (261 bhp; 195 kW) @ 6000 rpm and 343 N 'm (253 lb? Ft) @ 4000 rpm torque, up to 280 PS (276 bhp; 206 kW) @ 6400 rpm and 373 N? M (275Ã, lb? Ft) @ 4000 rpm of torque depends on the market.

2005 STIS received long-awaited DCCD controls available in other markets, as well as a slight upgrade of the wheelbase to match the Japanese specification WRX STi Spec-C and has 280 PS (210 kW; 280 hp).

Japanese

Applied A (2000)

August 2000 carries the 2001 WRX NB sedan. It has an EJ205 with AVCS coupled with an IHI TD04-HL turbocharger. The engine produces 250 PS (184 kW) at 6000 rpm with 35 kg (246 ft  · lbf, 333 N m) at 3600 rpm. The wheel is 16 inches in diameter (410 mm). This car uses 2 pots/1 pot front and rear brakes. Front brake rotor is ventilated while there is solid rear disk. It has a Torsen rear LSD and a final 4.44 drive ratio. The transmission has a close-ratio gear that is unique to the Japanese Subaru at the time. This car has a curb weight of 1,340 kg (2,954 pounds).

WRX Type RA STI is produced. The STi wagon is still manufactured, although it retains a 2 pot/2 pot potion from the previous STi model and features a narrower 17th wheel than the Legacy. The STi foglight cover has a white STi on them. WRX Type RA STI is used for Group N homology.

Applied B (2001)

The 2002MY WRX NB sedan debuted in September 2001. The mechanical specifications are similar to the previous year's model but the reinforcement weight has increased to 1,350 kg (2.976 pounds).

Along with the rest of the Impreza line, the WRX STi's lattice and body are updated lightly by Peter Stevens to give a sharper look when viewed from the side. The fog lamp cover has a pink STi letter. Not much more than small suspension repairs and small increases in torque output are done.

WRX Type RA STi is dropped for WRX STi Spec C. This model is much lighter than the WRX Type RA because it accepts glass panels and lighter bodies. Spec C handling is much better because of the increase in caster (from 3.5 degrees to 5 degrees). This is achieved by not changing the suspension mount point, but by extending the wheelbase (15 mm). This is done by entering different control groups. Increased casters greatly assist the ability of car turn-in. Spec C also has a rack rack ratio of 13: 1. The transmission is supplied with its own oil cooler.

The WRX STI car has stopped being produced.

Applied C (2002)

The WRX NB-R sedan was released in November 2002. The rated power and torque were the same as the previous year. The wheel diameter is increased to 17 "in size.Rear brake rotors are converted into ventilated disks, leaving the car to use only ventilated discs for braking.Car has 4 pots/2 front pots and rear brakes The rear wing is on the wing ladder, the car is now weighs 1,361 kg (3,000 pounds).

WRX STI is used for Group N homologation.

Applied D (2003)

The WRX line receives enhanced body and exterior updates. The WRX STi is now capable of ordering with DCCD.

WRX STi Spec C Type RA was released. It sported carbon fiber wings and carbon fiber lips. It also has a new set of BBS wheels as well as a newly tuned engine.

WRX STi V-Limited was released. It sports a 4-way damper tuned by Group N Rally Team World rider Toshi Arai. WRX STI is used for Group N homology.

Applied E (2004)

WRX WR-limited introduced. The car receives the STI spoiler and the front chin of the STI. There is a WR-stickered titanium shift button. The wheels are replaced for STI, colored Rays-sourced gold wheels.

This is the first Impreza STi model to be offered in the United States. Subaru launched this model at the Detroit International Auto Show, just 1 month after Mitsubishi announced the arrival of 271 horsepower Lancer Evolution 8, which outperformed the 2.0L WRX.

Applied F (2005)

WRX has the option to receive the same spoiler as the WRX STI. WRX has a strong back LSD now.

WRX STi received the same wheelbase enhancement as the Spec C. All STis received an additional curved rear curve to allow for increased wheel size. Wheel size changes from 17 "x 7.5" to 17 "x 8". In accordance with the increase in wheel width, turn-key lock-to-wheel has been reduced. Wheel strength is improved. The P.C.D. changed from 5 x 100 mm to 5 x 114.3 mm. The interior is also much better. The new center console now presents a very high class interior feel.

WRX STI Spec C receives Arai tuned absorber and swaybar 21 mm (0.8 inches). The rear suspension is changed from the rubber bushes to the foam pillows. The buffer towers are more rigid for better handling and stability. Strut towers are reinforced for better handling and better driving characteristics. The engine mount is converted from metal to a liquid-filled crate to reduce vibration to the car cabin. Some owners of 2006 have problems with these plastic machine mounts. The manufacturer will replace them, under warranty if damaged, with rubber mounts in 2005. The DCCD is updated using a torque-sensing mechanism inside the DCCD. The torque split is changed to 41/59. WRX STI Spec C is used for Group N homology.

WRX STI Spec C Type RA was released in November 2005, with 350 units produced. The RA type adds the following to the Spec C model of the STI spare parts catalog: 4-way adjustable reversed STI struts, SPI Japan-spec pink springs, lateral IMS links, STI trailing back links, STI 21 mm (0.8 inches) rear sway bar, STI rear pillowball suspension, STI 110Ã, mm (4.3Ã, in) open the rear axleback exhaust, STI 17 "x 8" Enkei and STI V-lip spoiler front wheels.

Applied G (2007)

The car is mechanically the same as the previous Japanese speculation revisions.

For STI, the changes include a different VF43 turbocharger equipped with a slightly larger wastegate port to prevent creep boost (VF43, as opposed to VF39 in older versions) and gearing revision on a 6-speed manual transmission. They also use a top feed injector rather than a side feed injector such as the previous STI model (04-06USDM). This means slightly different intake manifolds as well as TVG (Tumble Valve Generator) used for emissions at cold start-ups.

Special edition (STI)
S202

This car is an S-series Impreza based on Spec C. All suspension and powertrain parts including STi parts from the STi parts catalog. The interior includes a special edition yellow chair with red STi logo stitching. Smaller, lightweight AC compressors are installed to save weight. Brake rotors are gas. The wheels are labeled STI labeled Rays Volk.

S203

This limited edition Subaru is the S-series Impreza based on WRX STi. Once again basically a car with all STI parts available. It is sold with custom-made 18-inch (460 mm) BBS alloys with Pirelli tires.

S204

The new S204 was released in late 2005. It's based on the WRX STi and is similar to the S203. It's far away with a roof spoiler and has a different grille from the rest of the Impreza line. The S204 has a two-liter H4 engine (EJ20) capable of developing 324 PS (239 kW; 320 bhp) and a six-speed manual gearbox. When the S204 roaming reaches 100 km/h (62 mph) at 3000 rpm in the upper gear and can reach 220 km/h (137 mph) at around 6600 rpm.

The suspension can be described as 'stiff' with torsional stiffness enhanced by the inclusion of laterally mounted items described as "performance dampers" containing STi and Yamaha logos. As a result, cornering can be described as excellent. The addition of carbon fiber front-lip spoiler and rear diffuser to the already low suspension setting plus the use of low-profile Pirelli P Zero (Corsa) tires implies the S204 is intended primarily for closed road use.

Recaro has used carbon fiber extensively in driver manufacturing and front passenger seats available in the S204. Top side bolsters provide significant support to the driver during maneuvering that encourages lateral force and are considered an integral feature for the cornering performance of this vehicle. The seats are rigid in design and have relatively little bearing compared to other Impreza models.

The creative produced by Subaru for S204 shows that a limited trajectory of 600 S204 is made. Individual number badges for each car are located inside the engine room and repeated as small placards located at the base of the gear lever. However, five (5) WRX STI S204 is available to Subaru fans in New Zealand. Unlike other S204s sent to other countries (eg 30 units for Singapore) these five cars do not feature a hull in the cabin or in a machine that uniquely identifies each of the 600 vehicles reportedly produced. The lack of individual badging for these five cars questioned the true number of S204 produced.

WRX STI Spec C Type RA-R

At the end of October, 300 2007MY WRX STI Spec C Type RA-R is open to order. These cars are based on WRX STI Spec C. The wheels are replaced for 18 inch (460 mm) wheels, STI branded white wheels, branded Enkei. The machine has been blue and balanced. It produces 320 PS (235 kW; 316 hp) power. The suspension is built with the latest STI parts from the STI catalog. Brembo 6-piston Brake front brake. The turbo charger is based on a larger S203/S204 twin scroll unit. Brakes are made so they turn from silver to gold when heated from use. The rotor is placed. The 2nd R in "RA-R" is declared by an STI engineer meaning "radical".

WRX STI A-Line

The WRX STI A-Line is mechanically the same as the Japanese STI. The exterior has been aligned with the removal of the large rear spoiler, black Brembo brakes, titanium-colored Enkei wheels, black front lip STI and leather upholstery to target a more mature market.

Australia

Rev. A (2001)

WRX has an EJ205 rating of 218Ã, PS (160Ã, kW; 215Ã, hp) @ 6000 rpms. It carries a 17 "x 7" wheel and has a 4-piston/2-piston front and rear brake with a ventilated disc rotor all around.

Rev. B (2002)

Due to the slower acceleration complaints compared to the WRX GC-chassis, gear ratios and diff ratios are changed to the same specifications as the Japanese domestic WRX market to increase overtaking and in dental acceleration. The results are close to the first and second gear ratios similar to GC, but with the third, fourth and fifth teeth shorter.

Also added is the limited rear limited slip of Suretrac. Japanese engineers claim that the drive will still be directed to the gripping wheels even if the other wheels are off the ground.

Rev. D (2004)

WRX received the same Peter Stevens facelift design received by Imprezas. During 2005, the limited edition Subaru Impreza WRX WRP10 was produced, but limited to 200 vehicles. The Australian market model received engine upgrades to 168 kW and 300 Nm through increasing the compression ratio to 9.0: 1 and the addition of variable valve time to the intake camshafts.

The Subaru Impreza WRX WRP10 (2005) is a Limited Edition version of the Impreza WRX - an exclusive model for the Australian market. The WRP10 is available from the end of January 2005 and is limited to 200 units, featuring individualized numbered badges. This includes an increase in wheels, tires, suspensions, engines, and exhaust over standard WRX. 'WR' stands for 'World Rally', 'P' for Subaru partnership with Pirelli tires, and '10' shows the 10th anniversary of this partnership. STi carbon fiber bay machine strut brace and WRX suspension lowered the kit with STi spring dropped the height of the car ride by 15 mm (0.6 inches). Together, the sports section of the STI improves the stiffness to improve driving and handling; giving WRP10 a more aggressive attitude. The WRP10 includes a replacement STI Electronic Control Unit raising the peak power of the WRX's not significant 168 kW (225 hp) @ 6000 rpm to 175 kW (235 hp) at 6000 rpm. Torque increased 2 Nm to 302Ã, N? M (223 lb. Ft) @ 4000 rpm. Know that WRP10's STi tuned ECU is not compatible with flash because it has been locked by STi.

Europe

The Prodrive Performance Pack (PPP) is an official accessory for the UK GD-chassis WRX. It evolved from a WR Sport package that fitted into multiple RB5s. The 2007 version costs £ 1700 including VAT and installation, increasing power output from 230 PS (169 kW, 227 hp) to 270 PS (199 kW, 266 hp) and torque to 420 N? M (310 Â £ lb).

Rev. A (2001)

WRX has an EJ205 rated at 218 PS (160 kW) @ 6000 rpm. It carries a 17 "x 7" wheel and has a 4-piston/2-piston front and rear brake.

Rev. B (2002)

Due to the slower acceleration complaints of the WRX GD chassis compared to the WRX GC-chassis, the gear ratio is changed to the same specification as the Japanese WRX-spec to improve acceleration.

Rev. D (2004)

WRX received the same Peter Stevens facelift design received by Imprezas. Powerplant engine upgraded to 225 PS (165 kW). Some cost reductions are made, such as stereo depreciation.

Rev. F (2006)

2006: Europe receives WRX with EJ25. The power generated is 230 PS (169 kW) @ 5600 rpm with 32.6 kg (mb 236, ft, 320 N, m) @ 3600 rpm. The car weighed 1,405 kg (3.097 lb). The final ratio of the drive on this car is 4.111: 1. The car also receives the same facelift with other markets.

North America

Applied A (2000)

Early release date of WRX 2000.

Applied B (2001)

North America received its first Impreza WRX model. They are equipped with an EJ205 engine rated 227 hp (169 kW) at 6000 rpm with 217 lb ft (294 N m) at 4000 rpm. Unlike the Japanese EJ205, the US specification engine uses a Mitsubishi TD04-13T turbocharger unit. In stock, it reached a 13.6 psi (0.9 bar) peak. The seat is the same as the Impreza J-spec base. The wheels use the 16 "x 6.5" version of the J-spec WRX NB wheel while the brakes are 2-piston/1-piston front and rear with front rotor that has a ventilated disc. 2002 WRXs come with brake duct plates that guide the air in the front bumper vents to the wheels well. The gear ratio is the standard export model, but the last driver is the ratio of 3.9: 1. The back of the LSD is a thick clutch type. Steering rack has a ratio of 16.5: 1. 4 Gears electronic transmission (4EAT) WRXs have a Torque Distribution AWD system Variable not from conventional viscous center coupling differential. VTD uses electronically controlled hydraulically transfer couplings and planetary center differential gears to distribute power in a 45:55 split between front and rear axles in normal circumstances. The VTD system uses multiple sensors to measure front and rear driveshaft speeds, throttle position and gear selection. Then actively transfer the appropriate power between the front and rear wheels for optimal traction and handling. The WRX weighs 3,085 pounds (1,399 kg).

Applied C (2002-2003)

There are some changes from application B. The gear is converted to wide gear RA (1 mm increase in size) to increase transmission lifetime. There is also a valve that prevents the "drop-clutch" started in an attempt to reduce the number of broken gear boxes from a cruel AWD launch. The ignition ring is now illuminated with green lighting. Early 2002 WRXs had brake duct plate. At the end of the 2002 calendar year, brake fluid plates are no longer equipped with WRX. Shorter metal fuel pipes and longer connector hoses are implemented under the intake manifold to avoid fuel leaks at freezing temperatures.

Applied D (2004)

WRX received the same Peter Stevens facelift design received by Imprezas. WRX uses the same contoured seat as the 2004 US-spec WRX STI. WRX is equipped with multi-phase valve struts to improve the quality of the vehicle while maintaining good handling. The tachometer is moved to the center, and the speedometer is moved to the right.

In 2004, Subaru of America announced it would sell WRX STI. President Subaru Tecnica International said in an interview with Street & amp; Track the magazine he wants to beat Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution in the US. Thus, every iteration of the US WRX STi specification is essentially the same as the Spec-J STi C specification. All part numbers are matched, including the section number for the glass window and the silencer. However, instead of EJ207, the United States received the first EJ257, a 2.5-liter EJ207 version. Unlike the EJ207, it features a hypereutectic cast piston as opposed to a forged piston in the EJ207. The steering rack is standard STi 15.2: 1, not Spec C 13: 1

Applied E (2005)

WRX receives updated interiors, rocker body color panels, black painted headlamp bezels, and wheels previously seen on US-spec Legacy bases and single exhaust ports. Some WRX models have STI hood spoons that are much larger than other WRX spoons. The suspension has also received several minor updates to make handling more efficient than the 2004 model year. The cassette player in the stereo system is no longer offered.

Note: Saab released its 9-2X Aero, from its 9-2X line, which is essentially a re-skinned Impreza WRX Wagon of the same year model.

Like the Japanese model C specification, the US STIS specification accepts additional rear fenders to allow for increased wheel size. Wheel sizes ranging from 17 "x 7.5" to 17 "x 8". In accordance with the increase in wheel width, turn-key lock-to-wheel has been reduced. Wheel strength is improved. The P.C.D. changed from 5 x 100 to 5 x 114.3. The Suretrac front LSD in the 2004 model was replaced with a helical unit, the rear differential fixed unit of the same clutch type. The torque split is set at 35/65. In the interior, Stereo becomes standard. The badge has been revised and different views are given to the steering wheel, shift key, HVAC control, and center console.

Applied F (2006)

For 2006 Subaru Impreza WRX received a full front-end redesign, headlights with thick style with smoke-colored lenses, a three-part mesh type grill, and a new tail lamp cluster special. Three trim levels are available: WRX TR (Tuner Ready), WRX, and Limited. The weight of the sidewalk is 3,140 pounds (1,424 kg) for WRX TR, 3,192 pounds (1,448 kg) for WRX, and 3240 for WRX Limited.

The biggest change is the 2.5-liter EJ255 turbocharged intercooler engine, producing 230 hp (172 kW) at 5600 rpm. It replaces the 2.0-liter EJ205 engine used since the introduction of the WRX model. The larger-displacement engine produces 235 lb ft (319 Nm) peak torque at 3,600 rpm, compared to 217 lb ft (294 N m) at 4,000 rpm for the previous WRX. Performance is improved across all speed ranges, with greater emphasis on low-end and mid-range torque. The 2.5 liter WRX engine shares architecture and technology with the WRX STI engine, including the variable valve system of the Active Valve Control System (AVCS) and the Electronic Throttle Control system. The turbocharger remains the same unit as in 2002-2005MY US-spec WRXs, but peaked at 14.8 psi (1.0 bar) from a boost. The first gear in the transmission receives dual-ring sync to increase downshifts from 2 to 1 and reduce notchiness.

The 2006 Impreza WRX model earned some improved chassis and braking systems. In the sedan model, the aluminum front suspension lowering the A-arms reduces the unsprung weight. (The rear suspension amplifies the aluminum lateral connection in the 2005 model year.) The steering rack is updated to improve the feel of the wheel and the rack rack ratio is changed to 15.0: 1. On all WRX models, 7 x 7 inch (180 mm) aluminum alloy wheels replaces 5 x 16 inches 6.5 inches (170 mm) in advance. Tires are 215/45ZR17 versus 205/55R16 before. The more powerful brake system uses 11.5 in (292 mm) ventilated front discs and four-piston calipers instead of the previous two-piston caliper. The rear brakes are 11.3 in (287 mm) ventilated discs replacing previous 10.3 in (262 mm) compact discs, and two piston calipers replacing single piston calipers. The calipers are painted red with the name SUBARU in a white overlain.

The US STI spec receives the same facelift as the Japanese STI. Mechanical, DCCD (Driver Controlled Center Differential) and engine holder have been changed. Like a Japanese STI-mounted engine ride from a metal mount to a liquid-filled plastic to reduce vibration to the car's cabin. The manufacturer will replace them, under warranty, if damaged, by rubber and metal in 2005. Then the 2006 vehicles are equipped from the factory with mounts in 2005. The differential center is updated with the addition of a mechanically slip limited mechanism to complement the electromagnetic DCCD. The torque split is changed to 41/59. The oil pump in the transmission is also removed. The 2006 STI weighs approximately 3,350 Â £ (1,520 kg).

Applied G (2007)

Ikuo Mori replaces Kyoji Takenaka as President and CEO of Fuji Heavy Industries.

As a cost-cutting effort, the WRX has an aluminum suspension that is returned to the steel pieces. WRX and Limited trim levels receive additional audio ports in addition to cigarette lighter and MP3 CD playback.

In 2007, quite a lot of changes were made to US STI specifications. Due to Subaru's decision to reduce costs by cutting the amount of aluminum used, the AS STI specification no longer accepts the specific Spec C control arm. The current control arm is the aluminum used in the Japanese spec revision A and B non-Spec C STIS. The high caster angle has been reduced, which in turn reduces the wheelbase from 100 inches (250 cm) to 99.4 inches (252 cm). The rear shake bar has decreased in size from 20 mm (0.8 inches) to 19 mm (0.7 inches). The second, third and fourth gear gear ratios have been made longer (higher ratio) to improve fuel economy and driving ability, which inadvertently reduce drag time by 1/4 mile because of the ability to trap 114 mph (183 km/h ) in 4th gear, without a 5th shift. The transmission oil pump removed in the 2006 model was also brought back for the seventh-year model transmission. The EJ257 cylinder head has been redesigned to improve cooling, and the sodium filled exhaust valve has been removed. Pistons are the same as in previous years. Alternator changed from 90A to 110 amps. Rear Back Slip Differentials are now Torsen units, considered to be upgrades of previous model clutch type units. Turbo has also been converted to VF43, which has a different wastegate actuator than VF39. Side cowl hooks are more rigid than in 2006MY. Engine mounts are once again the hard rubber mounts used before 2006. In the interior, there are audio jacks that replace the ashtrays, rear center armrests with trunk pass-throughs and 120 W audio systems.

The ECU STI is completely reengineered to meet US LEV2 emissions requirements, which has caused throttle and timing problems. Secondary air pumps are also added to help meet LEV2. Top Feed Injector replaces Side Feed from the previous model.

WRX STI Limited is introduced with fog lights, leather interior, lip trunk spoiler, and optional moonroof. This is similar to the Japanese WRX STI A-line specification, except for mechanical cars based on the 2007MY US-spec WRX STI.

Saab 9-2X

Subaru produced a badge engineering version of the second generation Impreza hatchback as " Saab 9-2X " between 2004 and 2005. Only sold in the North American market for models of 2005 and 2006, the car earned the nickname "Saabaru". Car names are written as "9 2X " on the license, but as "9-2X" in ads and other text. The car was designated to be a direct competitor with the Volvo V50, because the car was also based on another car (Ford Focus). By the time 9-2X was conceived, Saab Automobile had become a wholly-owned subsidiary of General Motors (GM), and GM held a 20 percent stake in the parent company of Subaru, Fuji Heavy Industries.

Although still manufactured in Japan by Subaru, Saab appointed Michael Mauer to request a redesign of front and rear styling to further integrate Saab made with the brand's own design language. The completely fixed front fascia includes new fenders and hoods, with the rear getting tailgate and redesigned bumper. The interior accepts extra acoustic insulation above Subaru, with special attention to the firewall, carpet, roof, and rear window seals. The majority of the 9-2x interior is identical to the Impreza carts with just a few changes. Saab chose to offer a 2-tone seat design based on the second-generation Impreza gene before, as well as using a less conspicuous instrument cluster of second generation Impreza Genes. Saab also mentioned their own front seats incorporating active head restraints, unlike a fixed headrest in the equivalent Impreza WRX. The rear suspension arm is in aluminum, with further reduction of unsprung weight achieved by using plastics in heavier component parts, unique bushing for Saab, and recalibrated dampers. The steering has been made more responsive and precise in the Aero by using a steering rack that is shared by the STI WRX version, which has a faster 15.0: 1 steering ratio, a more rigid steering device and a more rigid chassis bushing. 9-2X is not very popular with Saab brand loyalists due to the fact that the change from Subaru is mostly cosmetic. 9-2X also won the highest safety award IIHS.

Saab plans to offer 9-2X to the limited public. Initial sales are slower than expected, with only 410 being sold in the first two months; However, incentives and promotions helped boost sales in May 2005 alone to beat combined sales this year up to that time. However, in October 2005, GM decided to sell 8.4 percent of the company to Toyota and dispose of the remaining 11.4 percent of shares back to Fuji in a stock buyback deal. The 9-2X was discontinued after the 2006 model with the dissolution of the partnership between Fuji and GM. 10,346 Saab 9-2Xs produced during the entire production process. Production for year 2005 model for most (8,514 total, about 58 percent Linear; 42 percent Aero). The remaining 1,832 is produced for the 2006 model year (about 82 percent 2.5i; 18 percent Aero). The Aero model was not sold in Canada for 2006.

2005 year model

Saab offers the 2005 model 9-2X with a Subaru 2.5-liter engine naturally aspirated EJ253 at the "Linear" trim level (165 hp or 123 kW and 166Ã, lb? Ft or 225 N m ), with a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine along with the Impreza WRX offered in the "Aero" badged model (227Ã, hp or 169Ã,kW and 217Ã,bb? ft or 294Ã, Â ± m). All-wheel drive comes standard with an optional four-speed automatic transmission available instead of a five-speed manual for both trims. For 2005, Saab offers three option packages. The first of these, the premium package, adding leather seats and for the US model, HID xenon headlamps. When ordered with a "Linear" trim, premium packages also include an in-dash six-CD changer, front fog lamps, vinyl door cards, and leather wrapped steering wheel and shift knobs. Cold weather packs add heated front seats, side-view mirror defoggers, and windshield/wiper defrosting defenders. In Canada, cars equipped with cold packs also include engine block heater. The last combination, a sports package, adds a sunroof, and to "Aero" only, including a 17 inch (43 cm) wheel.

2006 model year

Updated for the 2006 model year include re-branding from "Linear" to "2.5i", with a 2.5-liter engine upgraded to 173 hp (129 kW) and 166 ft (225 N) lb. The 2.0-liter Aero turbocharged engine makes way for a 2.5-liter turbocharged unit higher, which increases output to 230 hp (172 kW) and 235 lb ft (319 N m). For 2006, the car has a different option package that essentially damages the same equipment differently. The premium package is known as the skin package and incorporates the same additions as before. The cold weather package also remains unchanged. However, with a sports package with an upgraded 17-inch upgrade package (43Ã,® cm) being exclusive to Aero as a sunroof becomes a standalone option.
