San Pedro is a town in the southern part of the island of Ambergris Caye in Belize District in the country of Belize, in Central America. According to estimates mid-2015, the city has a population of about 16,444. It is the second largest city in Belize District and largest in the Belize Rural South election area. The sleepy fishing village was given the status of a city in 1984.
The people of San Pedro are known as San Pedranos and most of them are from Mexico. Most speak Spanish and English fluently. Due to the influence of English based on Kriol, San Pedranos speaks most English, as well as a transitional form between English and Spanish known as "Spanish Kitchen". It says one is not a true San Pedrano if one does not know how to fish.
The town is said to be the inspiration for the song "La Isla Bonita" (which started with the line "last night I dreamed of San Pedro"), written by Madonna, Patrick Leonard and Bruce Gaitsch.

Histori
The refugees from "Guerra de Castas" escaped mainly south to the northern Belize shelter where British authorities gave them refuge and encouraged them to settle. This was done in the hope that the refugees would eventually establish an agricultural settlement in Corozal and provide wooden camps with alternative food sources now that supplies through Bacalar in Mexico are no longer available.
This migration is a major factor in the settlement of northern Belize. The population grew from less than 200 in 1846, to 4,500 inhabitants in 1857, to 8,000 in 1858, in the Corozal District alone. According to the official census in 1861, the population of the northern part of the country was almost twice that of Belize City and the surrounding area.
The first permanent settlers from San Pedro arrived between 1848 and 1849. This may have been the relatives of fishermen who had previously built fishing camps on cayes and transferred their families to island security when Santa Cruz Maya rebelled. At first there were only four families, who soon joined the others from the nearby Bacalar area. The settlement soon grew in the village of about 30 homes and more than 50 residents. The establishment of Ambergris Caye is typical of this general pattern. The refugees who come to live here are farmers and fishermen in YucatÃÆ'án who continue this activity in San Pedro.
On November 27, 1984, San Pedro was officially granted municipal status. The declaration ceremony was attended by Governor-General Elmira Minita Gordon, Area Representative Louis Sylvestre, and most of San Pedro's residents. Gilberto Chico Gomez was the city's first mayor.

Tourism â ⬠<â â¬
Over the centuries, San Pedro has become one of the most popular tourist destinations with protected areas such as Hol Chan Marine Reserve, Shark Ray Alley, Bacalarchico, and more. One of San Pedro's most prized possessions is the Belize Barrier Reef. The San Pedro Barrier Reef is the 'second largest' in the world, the first being the Great Barrier Reef. It is home to a variety of species.
One of the main industries in the city is tourism, especially scuba diving. So many diver visitors there are two hyperbaric decompression chambers on the island.
The Ambergris Museum is in the city. The north road is over 10 miles long and has greatly expanded the development of resorts and beach houses with better access than just boats.
Today San Pedro is known for the festival, one of the most famous is the El Gran Carnaval de San Pedro.
El Gran Carnaval de San Pedro returned to the 1870s, a tradition centered around "Juan Carnaval". A legend states "Juan is an island god, who has sex with more than a thousand women from eight different countries and has many children." It is said that he was stabbed to death by his injured and jealous wife - leaving nothing but a will which was traditionally recited on Wednesday Abu. Puppet doll idol Juan Carnaval is burned every year as a symbol of cleansing the sins of society.
This tradition begins with the use of talcum powder and has now developed into watercolor and egg splitting. There are rules for this festival: The first day is restricted to children between 5 pm and 7 pm from Ruby's Hotel beach to the cemetery area and Barrier Reef Drive. They are not allowed to paint non-participating individuals or general signs, buildings, and Comparsa participants. Lastly they are not allowed to use rotten eggs, spray paint, or oil paint.
