Microsoft Office 2003 (code-named Office 11 ) is an office suite developed and distributed by Microsoft for its Windows operating system. Office 2003 was released to manufacturing on August 19, 2003, and then released to retail on October 21, 2003. It was the successor to Office XP and the predecessor of Office 2007.

New features in Office 2003 include rights management information; new collaboration features; enhance support for SharePoint, smart tags, and XML; and expansion of Office Online services. Office 2003 introduces two new programs into the Office product line: InfoPath, a program for designing, filling out, and submitting electronic structured data forms; and OneNote, a note-taking program for creating and organizing diagrams, graphics, handwritten notes, audio recordings, and text. It also introduces the Picture Manager graphics software to open, manage, and share digital images.

With the release of Office 2003, Microsoft replaced the Office productivity suite as an integrated system dedicated to information workers. As a result, Microsoft added the Office brand to all programs. Office 2003 is also the first version with support for Windows XP color and visual styles, and introduces updated icons.

Office 2003 is the latest version of Office to include menu bars and toolbars in all programs, as well as the latest version to include the file format "97 - 2003" as the default. It is compatible with Windows 2000 and Windows XP but not with Windows NT 4.0, Windows 98, or Windows ME. This is the last version of Office compatible with Windows 2000.

Microsoft released a total of three service packs for Office 2003 over its lifecycle. Service Pack 1 was released on July 27, 2004, Service Pack 2 was released on September 27, 2005, and Service Pack 3 was released on September 17, 2007. Mainstream Support for Office 2003 ended April 14, 2009, and extended support ended on April 8, 2014.

New features

The core applications, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access, have only a small upgrade from Office XP. Outlook 2003 accepts enhanced functionality in many areas, including better sharing and email and calendar information, full Unicode support, search folders, colored flags, Kerberos authentication, RPC over HTTP, and Cached Exchange mode. Another key benefit of Outlook 2003 is the increase of junk mail filters. Tablet and pen support is introduced in productivity applications. Word 2003 introduces better layout read layout , document comparison, tracking-changes and annotations/reviews, the Research Tasks Panel, voice comments, and XML-based formats among other features. Excel 2003 introduces a list of commands, some statistical functions and imports XML data, analysis and transformation/document customization features. Access 2003 introduces backup commands, the ability to view object dependencies, checks for errors in forms and reports among other features.

Office 2003 displays improvements on smart tags such as Smart tag lists, defined in XML, using regular expressions and extended type libraries. Intelligent tag recognition added to PowerPoint and Access. FrontPage 2003 introduces conditional formatting, Find and Replace for HTML elements, new tools for creating and formatting tables and cells, dynamic templates (Dreamweaver), Flash support, WebDAV, and SharePoint publications among other features. Publisher 2003 introduces the PostScript Generic Color printer driver for commercial printing. Information Rights Management Capabilities are introduced in document productivity applications to limit access to a set of users and/or limit the types of actions that users can take. Support for the managed code add-in as a VSTO solution was introduced.

Office 2003 is the latest version of Microsoft Office to include fully customizable toolbars and menus for all its applications, Office Assistant, the ability to enter service packs into original setup files, Office Web Components, and Save My Wizard Settings , which allows the user to choose whether to keep a copy of the local installation source files and some utility resource tools stored in the local cache. It's also the last version of Office to support Windows 2000. A new image organizer with basic editing features, called Microsoft Office Picture Manager, is included.

Only basic clipart and templates are included on disk media, with most content hosted online and can be downloaded from within Office applications. Microsoft advertises Office Online as the main Office 2003 feature "off the box". Office Online provides articles on ways, tips, training courses, templates, clip art, stock photos and media and downloads (including Microsoft and third-party add-ins for Microsoft Office programs).

Office 2003 has extensive XML integration (designing customized XML schemes, importing and converting XML data) throughout generating much more data-centric models (not document-based ones). The MSXML 5 Library was introduced specifically for Office XML integration. Office 2003 also has SharePoint integration to facilitate data exchange, collaborative workflow, and publishing. InfoPath 2003 was introduced to collect data in XML-based forms and templates based on information from the database.
