Star Wars Battlefront: Renegade Squadron is the third entry in the Star Wars: Battlefront video series, first released on October 9, 2007 in North America and later in Australia and Europe. The game is designed as an exclusive PlayStation Portable (PSP) and features Ops Rebel Alliance eponymous unit Renegade Squadron, which is currently non-canon. Renegade Squadron is one of the first games available in the bundled package with the newly released PSP redesign.

The single-player campaign follows the exploits of the Renegade Squadron since it was founded by Han Solo throughout its operational history, until its dissolution after the Battle of Endor. During the play Renegades participated in several battles, including from Yavin and Hoth. The game also features several types of multi-player modes. Unlike previous titles in series that require characters to have set classes, players in Renegade Squadron can build their character as they see fit.

Renegade Squadron received mixed reactions from the video game community. The game is considered superior to its predecessor (PSP version of Star Wars: Battlefront II) and it is praised for its customization options and online play, but the single player campaign is criticized for being short and shallow. Opinions about graphics are mixed, and controls are generally described as inadequate.

Gameplay

The overall structure of the Renegade Squadron is similar to other games in the Battlefront series because this is a war game that is played primarily from third person displays. The fighting takes place on the ground and in space and requires players to take command posts, certain areas of the territory represented by floating icons on the playground and colored dots on the player's head display. Each map has a number of command post sets, and is useful for players to occupy as much as possible (space battles using a modified command post system). Each side has a number of reinforcement tickets at the start of the battle - each time a soldier dies, the team loses a ticket when the soldier retaliates. In previous games in the series, players choose character classes before battle from a list of pre-made options, such as pilots or other regular infantry units. Each class has a combination of weapons and special equipment. Prior to the release of Renegade Squadron, LucasArts stated that the customization engine would allow millions of different character combinations. Other new features allow players to tap into asteroid bases on multiple space maps. In addition, players can earn medals by achieving defined goals, such as destroying a number of spacecraft.

Single-player

There are three options for a single game: campaign, instant action, and galaxy conquest. During the story campaign, the player controls the Renegade Squadron, under the command of Col Serra and sometimes Han Solo. There are also three flag capture variants, including a new mode called Hero flag, where players are allowed to control the famous Star Wars characters during standard flag battles by physically carrying their team flags. These heroes reach the Clone Wars and Civil War periods and include Asajj Ventress, Jango Fett, and Kit Fisto.

A relic of previous Battlefront games, the galaxy conquest is played as a turn-based board type with segmented rounds, similar to Risk . It is a simple representation of the Star Wars galaxy, with four quadrants containing several planets. Players and AI opponents each start with multiple planets (including planet headquarters with more reinforcements), which generate revenues each turn in the form of galactic credits. Credit is used to buy reinforcements and hire a special commander, who is a leader like Admiral Ackbar and Tarkin. During each turn, players are allowed to move troops around their controlled planet and attack the opponent's controlled planet. Attacking the planet starts a land battle or space, which can be fought manually or automatically. Players win by conquering all their opponent's planets.

Multiplayer

In addition to the single-player story mission, Renegade Squadron allows up to 16 players to compete through PSP infrastructure mode, which is a wi-fi internet connection. It can also support matches of eight people with ad-hoc, which is a local connectivity option for players in close physical distance. This type of multiplayer game is limited to conquer and capture the flag. Plot

Development

LucasArts announced Renegade Squadron in May 2007. The announcement stated that the game would be the only original game of Battlefront in 2007, and it would be developed by independent UK-based games. design company Rebellion Developments.
