A scan line (also scanline ) is a row, or row, in a raster scanning pattern, such as a video line on a cathode ray tube (CRT) display of a television set or monitor computer.

On CRT screens, horizontal scanning lines are visually visible, even when viewed remotely, as colored lines and alternate black lines, especially when progressive scanning signals with maximum vertical resolution below are displayed. This is sometimes used today as a visual effect in computer graphics.

This term is used, by analogy, for a single line of pixels in a raster graphic image. The scan line is important in image data representation, as many image file formats have specific rules for data at the end of the scan line. For example, there may be a rule that each scan line starts at a certain limit (such as bytes or words, see eg BMP file format). This means that even compatible raster data may need to be analyzed at the level of the scan line to convert between formats.
