History

Santa Monica has long been inhabited by the Tongva people. Santa Monica is called Kecheek in Tongva. The first non-native group to set foot in the area was the Gaspar de Portolà penj explorer party, who was camped near the Barrington and Ohio Street junctions on August 3, 1769. Named after the Christian saint Monica, there are two stories of how the city's name appears. Someone said it was named in honor of the feast day of Saint Monica (Saint Augustine's mother), but her feast is May 4th. Another version says it was named by Juan CrespÃÆ' because of a pair of springs, Kuruvungna Springs (Serra Springs), reminiscent of the tears of Saint Monica spilling his son's initial displeasure.

In Los Angeles, several battles were fought by Californios. After the Mexican-American War, Mexico signed the Agreement Guadalupe Hidalgo, which gave Mexicans and Californios life in certain countries of inalienable rights. The sovereignty of the US government in California began on February 2, 1848.

In the 1870s, Los Angeles and Independence Railroad, connect Santa Monica with Los Angeles, and a jetty to the bay. The first town hall was a simple brick building in 1873, then a beer hall, and now part of the Santa Monica Hostel. It is Santa Monica's oldest old structure. In 1885, the city's first hotel was the Santa Monica Hotel.

The entertainment docks became very popular in the first decades of the 20th century and the vast Pacific Electric Railroad brings people to the city shores from across the Greater Los Angeles Area.

Around the beginning of the 20th century, more and more Asian Americans lived in and around Santa Monica and Venice. A Japanese fishing village is near Long Wharf while a small number of Chinese live or work in Santa Monica and Venice. Both ethnic minorities are often viewed differently by the White Americans who are often disposed of well into Japan but humbled against the Chinese. The Japanese village fishermen are an integral economic part of the Santa Monica Bay community.

Donald Wills Douglas, Sr. built a factory in 1922 at Clover Field (Santa Monica Airport) for Douglas Aircraft Company. In 1924, four Douglas-made aircraft took off from Clover Field to try the world's first air travel. Two aircraft returned after traveling 27,553 miles (44,342 km) in 175 days, and were greeted on their return on September 23, 1924, with a crowd of 200,000 (massive forecasts). The Douglas Company (later McDonnell Douglas) kept the facility in town until the 1960s.

The Great Depression hit Santa Monica deeply. One report provided jobs across the city in 1933 for only 1,000. Hotels and owners of bankrupt office buildings. In the 1930s, corruption infected Santa Monica (along with neighboring Los Angeles). The Federal Employment Project Administration helps build several buildings, especially the Town Hall . The Post Office Office and Barnum Hall (Santa Monica High School auditorium) are also among other WPA projects.

Douglas's business grew astronomically with the start of World War II, employing some 44,000 people in 1943. In order to defend itself from airstrikes, the designers of Warner Brothers Studios set up an intricate camouflage disguising factories and airfields. RAND Corporation started as a Douglas Company project in 1945, and turned to an independent think tank on May 14, 1948. RAND eventually acquired a 15-acre (61,000 mÃ, ²) campus between the Civic Center and the harbor entrance.

The completion of the Santa Monica Toll Road in 1966 brought a promise of new prosperity, albeit at the expense of the Pico neighborhood that has become a prominent West-African-American enclave.

Beach volleyball is believed to have been developed by Duke Kahanamoku in Santa Monica during the 1920s.

Geography

The city of Santa Monica rests on a mostly flat slope that leads to Ocean Avenue and to the south. The tall cliff separates the north side of the city from the beach. Santa Monica borders on the L.A. neighborhood. Pacific Palisades to the north and Venice to the south. To the west, Santa Monica has a 3 mile long coastline in front of Santa Monica Bay, and east of the city limits is the Los Angeles West Los Angeles and Brentwood communities.

Climate

Santa Monica has a coastal Mediterranean climate (KÃÆ'¶ppen Csb ). Santa Monica enjoys an average of 310 days of sunshine each year. It is in the resilience zone of USDA 11a plants. Due to its location, located in the wide and open Santa Monica Bay, the morning fog is a common phenomenon in May, June and early July (caused by variations in ocean temperatures and currents). Like other residents of the greater Los Angeles area, residents have specific terminology for this phenomenon: "May Gray" and "June Gloom". Cloudy skies usually occur on a June morning, but usually a strong sun burns the fog during the day. In late winter/early summer, fog every day is a phenomenon as well. It happens all of a sudden and may last several hours or past sunset time. Nevertheless, it will sometimes remain cloudy and cool throughout the day during June, even when other parts of the Los Angeles area enjoy the clear skies and warmer temperatures. Sometimes, the sun can shine on east 20th Street, while the beach area is overcast. As a general rule, beach temperatures of 5 to 10 degrees Fahrenheit (3 to 6 degrees Celsius) are colder than the mainland during the summer, and 5-10 degrees warmer during the winter evenings.

It was also in September that the highest temperatures tended to be achieved. It was winter, when the hot, dry winds in Santa Anas were the most common. Conversely, temperatures that exceed 10 degrees below average are rare.

The rainy season starts from late October to late March. A winter storm usually approaches from the northwest and passes quickly across Southland. There was very little rain for the rest of the year. The total annual rainfall is unpredictable because the rainy years are sometimes followed by drought. There was never any snow or ice, but there was hail.

Santa Monica usually enjoys cold winds blowing from the ocean, which tends to keep the air fresh and clean. Therefore, smoke is less a problem for Santa Monica than elsewhere around Los Angeles. However, in the fall months of September to November, Santa Ana winds will sometimes blow from the east, bringing the smoky inland air to the shore.

Environment

Santa Monica is one of the most environmentally friendly municipalities in the country. The city first proposed its Sustainable City Plan in 1992 and in 1994, was one of the first cities in the country to formally adopt a comprehensive sustainability plan, establishing waste reduction and water conservation policies for both the public and private sectors through the Office of Sustainability and environment. Eighty-two percent of public utilities in the city now operate with alternative fuels, including nearly 100% of the city bus system, making it the largest fleet in the country. Santa Monica's fleet and bus fleets are now their source of natural gas from Redeem, a renewable and renewable natural gas renewable supplier originating from Southern California derived from non-fracked methane biogas produced from organic TPA waste.

Santa Monica has adopted the Energy Self-Reliance Initiative, with the goal of achieving full energy independence by 2020 (compared to 33% of California's renewable energy target). In the last 15 years, greenhouse gas emissions have been cut by nearly 10% compared to 1990 levels, with further reductions planned by the Sustainability Office.

The urban runoff facility (SMURFF), the first of its kind in the US, captures and treats 3.5 million gallons (13,000 m 3 ) of water every week that would otherwise flow into the bay through storm-flows and sell them back to the end user inside the city for reuse as gray water, while bio-swales throughout the city allow rainwater to seep in and replenish groundwater supplies. Ground water supply, in turn, plays an important role in the Municipal Water Master Plan, where Santa Monica has set a goal of achieving 100% water independence by 2020. The city has many programs designed to promote water conservation among the population, including rebates of $ 1.50 per square foot for those who turn the intensive water lawn into more local drought gardens that require less water.

Santa Monica also instituted green building codes in which simply building the code automatically made the building equivalent to the LEED Green Building Council US standard. The city Main Library, for example, is one of LEED's certified or LEED buildings in the city. Built on 200,000 gallons of cistern that collects rainwater filtered from the roof. Water is used for landscape irrigation.

Since 2009, Santa Monica has developed a Non-Zero Strategic Operation Plan where the city will set a goal to divert at least 95% of all waste away from landfills, and to recycling and composting, by 2030. The plan includes waste food composting program , which diverts 3 million pounds of restaurant waste from landfills every year. Currently, 77% of all solid wastes produced throughout the city are diverted from landfills.

The city is also in the process of implementing a 5-year and 20-year Bicycle Action Plan with the goal of reaching 14 to 35% share of bike transport mode by 2030 through the installation of improved bike infrastructure throughout the city. Other environmental-focused initiatives include roadside recycling, roadside compass bins (other than trash, yard and recycling bin), farmers' markets, community gardens, gardening, urban forest initiatives, hazardous materials collection services, green business certification, city bus system and Metro Rail Expo Line (replacing the former Pacific Electric Santa Monica Air Line which was operated in 1953).

This per-capita crime rate is calculated based on Santa Monica's full-time population of about 85,000. However, the Santa Monica Police Department has suggested a significantly lower level of per capita crime, as tourists, workers and beach seekers can increase the city's daytime population to between 250,000 and 450,000 people.

Violent crime affected 0.67% of the population in Santa Monica in 2006, in line with Los Angeles County (0.65%), but was higher than the average for California (0.53%) and the state (0.55% ).

The shooting at Santa Monica in 2013 caused six (including offenders) to be killed and five others injured.

Gang activity

The neighborhood of Pico Santa Monica (south of Santa Monica Freeway) undergoes some gang activity. The city estimates there are about 50 gang members based in Santa Monica, although some community organizers have denied this claim. Gang activity has been prevalent for decades in the Pico neighborhood.

In October 1998, alleged Culver City 13 gang member Omar Sevilla, 21, of Culver City was killed. Several hours after the shooting of Sevilla, German tourist Horst Fietze was killed. A few days later, Juan Martin Campos, 23, a Santa Monica City employee, was shot and killed. Police believe this is a murderous vengeance for Omar Sevilla's death. Less than twenty-four hours later, Javier Cruz was injured in a shooting from outside his home on the 17th and Michigan.

In 1999, there was a double killing at the Westside Clothing store on Lincoln Boulevard. During the incident, members of the Culver City gang David "Puppet" Robles and Jesse "Psycho" Garcia entered the masked shop and started firing, killing Anthony and Michael Juarez. They then ran out to a holiday vehicle driven by members of the third Culver City gang, who is now also in custody. The clothing store is believed to be a local hangout for Santa Monica gang members. The death toll included two men from Northern California who had just visited the shopkeeper, their cousin, to see if they could open a similar shop in their area. Police said the incident was in retaliation for the shooting committed by Santa Monica a 13-day gang before the Juarez brothers were shot dead.

In addition to competition with the Culver City gang, gang members also clashed with Venetians and Los Angeles West gangs. Major rivals in the region include Venice 13, Graveyard Gangster Crips, and the Venetian Shoreline Crips gang in the Oakwood area of Venezia, California.

The time travel between downtown Santa Monica and downtown Los Angeles is about 47 minutes long.

The historical aspect of the Expo route route is worth noting. The service was discontinued in 1953 but the delivery of diesel-powered goods to a warehouse along the route continued until March 11, 1988. The neglect of the path raised concerns within the community and all road rights were purchased from the South Pacific by Los Angeles Metropolitan. Transportation Authority.
