Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. (Korean: ????; Hanja: ???? (Literally "tristar electronics")) is an electronics company South Korean multinational headquartered in Suwon, South Korea. Through a highly elaborate ownership structure with circular ownership, it is Samsung Group's flagship company, accounting for 70% of group revenue in 2012. Samsung Electronics has an assembly plant and sales network in 80 countries and employs approximately 308,745 people. It is the world's largest information technology company, electronics maker and chip maker by revenue. As of October 2017, Samsung Electronics market capitalization reached US $ 372.0 billion.
Samsung has long been a major producer of electronic components such as lithium-ion batteries, semiconductors, chips, flash memory and hard drive devices for clients such as Apple, Sony, HTC and Nokia. It is the world's largest mobile phone and smart phone manufacturer, starting with the original Samsung Solstice and then sparked by the popularity of its Samsung Galaxy lineup. The company is also a major vendor of tablet computers, especially the Samsung Galaxy Tab collection that Android supports, and is generally regarded as a pioneer of the phablet market through the family of Samsung Galaxy Note devices. Samsung has been the world's largest television producer since 2006, and the world's largest mobile phone manufacturer since 2011. It is also the world's largest memory chip maker. In July 2017, Samsung Electronics took over Intel's position as the world's largest maker of semiconductor chips.
Samsung, like many other South Korean-run chaebol, has been criticized for low dividend payouts and other governance practices that support controlling shareholders at the expense of ordinary investors.
In 2012, Kwon Oh-hyun was appointed CEO of the company but announced in October 2017 that he would resign in March 2018, citing "an unprecedented crisis".

History
1969-1987: Initial years
Samsung Electric Industries was established as a Samsung Group industry in 1969 in Suwon, South Korea. The initial products are electronic and electrical appliances including televisions, calculators, refrigerators, air conditioners and washing machines. In 1970, Samsung Group established another subsidiary, Samsung-NEC, together with NEC Corporation Japan to produce home appliances and audiovisual devices. In 1974, the group expanded its semiconductor business by acquiring Korea Semiconductor, one of the first chip-making facilities in the country at the time. The acquisition of Korea Telecommunications, the manufacturer of electronic switching systems, was completed at the beginning of the next decade in 1980.
In 1981, Samsung Electric Industries has produced more than 10 million black and white televisions. In February 1983, Samsung founder Lee Byung-chull, along with the samsung industry council and corporate agreement and assistance by sponsoring the event, made the announcement subsequently dubbed the "Tokyo declaration", where he stated that Samsung intended to be a DRAM (dynamic random-access memory). One year later, Samsung became the third company in the world to develop 64 kb DRAM. In 1988, Samsung Electric Industries merged with Samsung Semiconductor & amp; Communication to form Samsung Electronics, as before, they are not a company and not a leading company together, but they are not rivals, because they have been negotiating for a while, until they finally join.
1988-1995: Consumer struggle
Samsung Electronics launched its first mobile phone in 1988, in the South Korean market. Sales were initially poor and in the early 1990s, Motorola held a market share of over 60 percent in the country's mobile phone market compared to just 10 percent for Samsung. Samsung's mobile phone division also struggled with low-quality and poor products until the mid-1990s and out of this sector is often a topic of discussion within the company.
1995-2008: Making components
Lee Kun-Hee decides that Samsung needs to change its strategy. The company suspended the production of many bestselling product lines and instead pursued the process of designing and manufacturing components and investing in new technologies for other companies. In addition, Samsung outlined a 10-year plan to eliminate its image as a "budget brand" and to challenge Sony as the world's largest consumer electronics manufacturer. It is expected that in this way Samsung will gain an understanding of how products are created and deliver future technological advantages. This patient vertical integration strategy of the manufacturing component has paid off for Samsung in the late 2000s.
As Samsung shifts away from the consumer market, the company devises plans to sponsor major sporting events. One such sponsor is for the 1998 Winter Olympics held in Nagano, Japan.
As a chaebol, Samsung Group uses a wealth that allows companies to invest and develop new technologies rather than build products at a level that will not adversely affect Samsung's finances.
Samsung has a number of technological breakthroughs, particularly in the area of ââmemory that is common in most of today's electrical products. This included the world's first 64Mb DRAM in 1992, 256 MB of DRAM in 1994, 1Gb of DRAM in 1996. In 2004, Samsung developed the world's first 8Gb NAND flash memory chip and a manufacturing deal struck with Apple in 2005. The deal supplying Apple with sealed memory chips in 2005 and, in October 2013, Samsung remains a major supplier of Apple components, manufacturing the A7 processor in the iPhone 5S model.
2008 to present: Consumer products

In 2005, Samsung Electronics surpassed its Japanese rival, Sony, for the first time becoming the second largest and most popular consumer brand in the world, as measured by Interbrand.
In 2007, Samsung Electronics became the second-largest mobile phone maker in the world, surpassing Motorola for the first time. In 2009, Samsung achieved a total revenue of US $ 117.4 billion, beating Hewlett-Packard to become the world's largest technology company measured by sales.
In 2009 and 2010, the US and EU fined the company, along with eight other memory chip makers, for its part in a pricing scheme that took place between 1999 and 2002. Other fined companies include Infineon Technologies, Elpida Memory and Micron Technology. In December 2010, the EU granted Samsung Electronics immunity to act as an informant during the investigation (LG Display, AU Optronics, Chimei InnoLux, Chunghwa Picture Tubes and HannStar Display were involved as a result of corporate intelligence).
Despite its consistent expansion, Samsung, along with chairman Lee Kun-hee, has developed a reputation for insecurity regarding financial stability and the potential for future crises to emerge. After returning from a temporary retirement in March 2010, Kun-hee stated that "the future of Samsung Electronics is not guaranteed because most of our flagship products will be outdated in 10 years from now."
The company has set ambitious goals to reach $ 400 billion in annual revenue in ten years. The company has 24 research and development centers around the world, and since the early 2000s and in Vision 2020, Samsung has been emphasizing technical research and development. However, many online complaints indicate that the company is weak in listening to customer feedback regarding the design of the technology and its software.

Since smartphone sales - especially lower-priced handset sales in markets such as India and China - Samsung achieved record revenue in the third quarter of 2013. Operating profit for this period rose to around 10.1 trillion won ($ 9.4 billion), the figure driven by sales of memory chips to customers such as Apple, Inc. Relationship with Apple Inc.
Despite recent litigation activities, Samsung and Apple have been portrayed as frenemies that share a love-hate relationship. Samsung is the main supplier for Apple - first providing memory for iPod devices early in 2005, and Apple is a major customer for Samsung - by 2012 its component sales are considered valuable in the region of revenue of $ 8 billion for Samsung - to the point where Apple CEO Tim Cook initially opposed litigation against Samsung who was wary of the company's key supply chain components for Apple.
In April 2011, Apple Inc. announced that it sued Samsung over the design of its Galaxy phone lineup. The lawsuit was filed on April 15, 2011 and alleges that Samsung infringed Apple's trademark and patent from iPhone and iPad. Samsung issued a lawsuit against Apple for patent infringement. In August 2011, at The Regional Court of DÃÆ'üsseldorf, Apple was given an initial order of sales and marketing of Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 throughout Europe except the Netherlands. The ban has been temporarily withdrawn in the EU, with the exception of Germany, whilst under investigation whether or not it complies with the original order.
On August 31, 2012, the Tokyo District Court ruled that Samsung Electronics' mobile device did not infringe on Apple patents. This case only discusses Apple patents that allow mobile devices and personal computers to sync or share data with each other and is not comparable to US court cases deciding on 24 August. On October 18, 2012, the UK High Court ruled that Samsung did not infringe on Apple's design patents. Apple was forced to issue an apology in court to Samsung on the official UN website.
Relationships with Best Buy Co., Inc.
Best Buy and Samsung join together to create Samsung Experience Shop, a shop-in-store-that enables customers to test the company's latest products, and get training in their existing cellular products. In the summer of 2013, more than 1,400 Best Buy and Best Buy Mobile Shops have established Samsung Experience Shop. About 460 sq ft of space is dedicated to SES, with firm placement at the entrance of Best Buy, as well as a visible sign in any part of the store. The Samsung Experience Shop's goal is to make Samsung products, the Galaxy, more accessible to customers.
The first Samsung Experience Store started launching at all Best Buy locations in the United States in May 2013. In May 2014, Best Buy announced plans to add 500 new Samsung Entertainment Store. While Samsung Experience's previous location focuses primarily on displaying and providing support for Samsung Galaxy smartphones, cameras and tablets, this new location will showcase and support the company's home theater products.
Unlike Samsung Experience Shop, Samsung Entertainment Experience will be run by Samsung's best trained Samsung partners. The new centers are expected to finish rolling throughout Best Buys in the US in January 2015.
Design
In the early 1990s, Samsung began to consider the importance of physical design in its products. Located at the corporate headquarters in Gangnam (south of Seoul), the company's design center includes over 900 full-time designers. In 1971 there were only two designers in the entire company, whose number increased to 510 in 2005.
The company overhauled its designs over a two-year cycle. For the first year, he examines world design trends, followed by product strategy. Then map out a new design plan during the second year.
Since 2006, it has won as many as 210 awards from international design institutes. It received the iF (International Forum) design award and IDEA. Working with partners, Samsung is the winner in eight categories in the 2009 IDEA award, earning the most awards.
At iF Material Awards 2010, the company won a Gold Award for its five products including an external hard disk. The IF Material Awards are awarded by the International Forum Design GmbH Hannover, a design award for materials design and process technology. In 2010, the German company selected a total of 42 products in the field of household appliances, furniture, and industrial design. Samsung won the award in five categories including external hard disk, full touch screen phone, "side-by-side" refrigerator, compact digital camera, and laser printer toner.
Environmental recordings
All Samsung phones and MP3 players introduced on the market after April 2010 are free of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and brominated flame retardants (BFRs).
The company is listed in Greenpeace's Guide to Greener Electronics, which assesses electronics companies on policies and practices to reduce their impact on climate, produce greener products, and make their operations more sustainable. In November 2011 Samsung was ranked 7th out of 15 leading electronics manufacturers with a score of 4.1/10. In the newly re-launched guide, Samsung moved to two places (5th in October 2010) but got maximum points to provide verified data and greenhouse gas emissions and also got good value for Sustainable Operations with a guide that praised e its pretty good. garbage collection program and information. However, the company was criticized for not setting ambitious targets for increasing the use of renewable energy and for becoming a member of trade associations who have commented on energy efficiency standards.
In June 2004, Samsung was one of the first major electronics companies to openly commit to eliminate PVC and BFR from new models of all their products. But the company failed to meet the deadline to become PVC-free and BFR, and has issued a new phase-termination date. Greenpeace activists protested at the company's Benelux headquarters in March 2010 for what Greenpeace calls broken Samsung's promises.
The Company has been awarded as one of ten global companies in the Carbon Disclosure Leadership Index (CDLI). It is the only Asian company among the top ten companies. In addition, the company is listed in the Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI).

The Company is also increasing its efforts to recover and recycle electronic waste. The amount of waste that was saved in 60 countries during 2009 was 240,000 tons. The "Samsung Recycling Direct" program, the company's voluntary recycling program that took place in the United States, expanded to Canada.
In 2008, the company was praised for its recycling efforts by the US Take Back Coalition advocacy group as "the best environmentally friendly recycling program".
Litigation and security issues
Worker safety
At the semiconductor factory Gi-Heung and On-Yang Samsung, at least 26 employees were diagnosed with blood cancer, a total of 193 people fell ill with cancer or terminal disease are scarce. Samsung initially denied responsibility for the disease. Although Samsung is known to dislike unions, these sick workers are organized into SHARPS groups (Supporters for Health and Rights in the Semiconductor Industry). The much-funded movie Another Promise was produced in 2013 to describe the victim compensation struggle, as well as a documentary film called The Empire of Shame. In May 2014, Samsung offered apologies and compensation to workers who fell ill. The company then does not follow all the recommendations of specially-appointed mediation committees, paying several families outside the scheme to be agreed upon and requiring them to drop all costs further, encouraging SHARPS to continue legal and public action. The dispute is still ongoing, as the number of sick and dead employees is still rising.
DRAM pricing
In December 2010, the European Commission fined six LCD panel manufacturers, including Samsung, totaling EUR648.925 million to operate as a cartel. The Company received a full reduction of potential fines for being the first company to assist EU anti-trust authorities.
On October 19, 2011, Samsung was fined EUR145.73 million for being part of a ten-company price cartel for DRAM that runs from July 1, 1998 to June 15, 2002. The company accepts, like most other cartel members, a 10% reduction to acknowledge the facts to the investigator. Samsung had to pay 90% of their share of the settlement, but Micron avoided payment as a result of initially disclosing the case to the researchers. Micron remains the only company that avoids all payments from deductions under notification of settlement.
In Canada, price fixes were investigated in 2002. The recession began in that year, and price fixing ended, but by 2014, the Canadian government reopened the case and investigated quietly after the EU's success. Sufficient evidence was found and presented to Samsung and two other manufacturers during a class action lawsuit trial. The companies approved a $ 120 million deal, with $ 40 million in fines, and $ 80 million to be paid back to Canadians who bought computers, printers, MP3 players, game consoles or cameras from April 1999 through June 2002.

The CPSC did not issue an official withdrawal notice on September 15, 2016, and stated that Samsung has received at least 92 reports of overheated batteries in the US, including 26 reports of burns and 55 reports of property damage.
