In the naval architecture, the dirt deck is the deck that forms the cabin roof built behind, or the "rear", part of the superstructure of a ship.
The name is derived from the French word for the stern, la poupe , from the Latin puppis . So the dirt deck is technically a stern deck, which on a sailing vessel is usually lifted as a stern cab roof or "after", also known as a "dirt cabin". On the sailboat, with the helmsman at the stern, the high position is ideal for navigation and sighting of crews and screens.
On modern-engined motorized warships, the ship's functionality once performed on the dirt deck has been moved to the bridge, usually located above the superstructure of the ship's center, or the right-sided carrier island.
