They usually handle both front desk agent tasks and some tasks from the accounting department. This is demanded by the fact that most fiscal days close at or around midnight, and normal business days of employees in the accounting department are not widespread to cover today's time.
In larger hotels, night auditors can work with other nighttime employees such as night managers, hotel security guards, phone attendants, room service maids, and bellhops. In smaller hotels and motels, night auditors can work on their own, and maybe even "on-call", which means that once he finishes the daily report, the auditor retires to an area far from the table while remaining available to attend unexpected requests of guests.
In the smallest hotel and some bed and breakfast, the front desk may close completely overnight. Guests at the facility are usually given contact numbers for employees or managers, who may be sleeping in or near to, for use in emergencies.

The night audit itself is a guestbook audit. The guest book (or head office ledger) is a collection of all receivables for registered guests at this time. It can also be defined as a collection of all guest folios. Folio (bill receipt) is an account of an individual guest who is currently registered. The purpose of the night auditor is, but is not limited to, ensuring the accuracy of all financial information, and collecting all necessary documents to complete the audit. This will include withdraw any or all of the guest registration cards examined, and ensure all guests check-out in the system to be checked.
One of the duty of the night auditor is to post the room rate and room tax that day to each folio guest at business closure (which usually takes place from midnight to 2 am) Secondly, the night auditor should ensure the accuracy of the cost to the folio guest, ensuring that the amount of revenue due to receivables from various departments (eg Food & Beverages, Rooms, Souvenir Shop) found on the department control sheet equals the amount of expenses charged to the guest folio.

In addition to accounting functions, night auditors may also be required to perform a typical front desk function during cemetery removal. These functions include check-in, check-out, reservation, responding to guest complaints, coordinating household requests, and handling any emergency that may arise.
Night auditors can work with security personnel to maintain security levels during late hours of the night for night and guest staff. In addition to balancing the guestbook, the night auditor is usually responsible for balancing the city's big book and progress ledger. The city ledger comprises money paid to the hotel by credit card companies and direct bill accounts. The city ledger also contains a home account, such as a management dry cleaning fee, or a localized (usually written) phone call charge at the end of each month. The advance ledger is appropriately called because it is a great book for guests who have sent money up front to pay or guarantee their stay. These funds are posted to the advance ledger when received by the hotel, and then transferred to the guest folio (in the guest book) upon arrival of the guest
