Histori Edit
The garden lakes were created when settlers John and Charles Swauger stemmed Poplar Lick Run to create hydro power for sawmill and mill operations. The lake was expanded to thirteen acres when the Civil Conservation Corps replaced the original dam with a larger one. The CCC was active in the park from 1933 to 1942, maintaining forest walks, planting trees, and adding daily use facilities including baths, gazebo, and picnic huts. CCC also built cabins for overnight stays and slopes that created the state's first ski resort. The CCC recreation hall and officer headquarters are still used in the park.
