History
The first recorded European settlement in the city of New Dorp occurred on the coast, in 1671, when Governor Edmund Andros patented the land to Obediah Holmes, a land of 86 acres (35 hectares) of Lot of Governors. A small two-room cottage was built near the beach. This small colonial house will be owned by Nathaniel Britton, and is known as Britton Cottage. This cottage will stand for over 200 years, as the New Dorp Beach area thrives around it, eventually finding itself sitting in the corner of New Dorp Lane and Cedar Grove Avenue.
After the Civil War, the area began to prosper as a resting place, as seasonal camps and bungalows began to flourish along the streets along Cedar Grove Avenue. Along the beach, wooden pier and hotel appear. The New Dorp Beach Hotel, formerly situated along the coast, sits in many places overlooking Cedar Grove Avenue and the Marine Way, which once stretched into the water. Along the southern end, the Cedar Grove Beach Club grew up, with a row of summer bungalows.
In 1879, St. John's Guild acquired 14 acres (5.7 ha) of land along the coast of New Dorp Beach, and built a hospital, known as Seaside Hospital. This, together with the dock for their ship, will be owned by the St. Francis. John until 1951, when the hospital was sold. The hospital and surrounding buildings were later destroyed.
Britton Cottage will be donated to the Institute of Art and Science Staten Island by Nathaniel Britton, for the sake of preservation of colonial architecture. The house will be flattened and rebuilt at the foot of Richmond Road, in historic Richmondtown, in 1967. At that time, most of the old resort communities and seaside properties on the shores of Cedar Grove Avenue have been acquired by the city through leading companies. domain. The property was destroyed to prepare for Shore Front Drive, part of master plan Robert Moses. But in the 1960s, opposition to Moses' projects had forced the mayor to free Moses from his position, and the city's fiscal crisis helped stop an approaching new highway, which was never built.

Land now sits as a park in the Department Park, with many of its old streets now turning into a walking path, and many old trees grow. The remains of one of the hotels or coastal communities were buried beneath the 10 foot (3.0 m) dunes that emerged in the mid-1980s, while the foundations of the old hospital had been dug by eroding sand.
The residents of New Dorp Beach are a more diverse crowd than the homogeneous blocks above Hylan Blvd. Most of the houses are converted beach houses with many attached houses mixed. Many residents of Italian or Irish descent.
New Dorp Beach is home to Miller Field, Dugan Park, and neighborhood namesperson, New Dorp Beach. Floods occur regularly between the Marine Way and Tysen's Lane, where ground elevations go to sea level and below to meet tidal wetlands at Cedar Grove Beach. A small saltwater pool at the foot of Marine Way appeared on the 1874 beer map of Richmond. Alois Peteler builds a pool for his hotel, the South Beach Pavilion.
