Histori

1950s-1970s

Kemmons Wilson, resident of Memphis, Tennessee, was inspired to build his own motel after being disappointed with poor quality and inconsistent roadside accommodations during a family trip to Washington, DC The name "Holiday Inn" was created by architect Wilson Eddie Bluestein as a joke during the construction of the first hotel, referring to the 1942 Christmas-themed musical movie Holiday Inn , starring Bing Crosby and Fred Astaire. Their first hotel/motel opened in August 1952 as "Holiday Inn Hotel Courts" at 4925 Summer Avenue in Memphis, the main highway to Nashville. In the early 1990s it was destroyed, leaving a plaque commemorating the site.

Wilson partnered with Wallace E. Johnson to build additional motels on the road to Memphis. At that time the headquarters of the Holiday Inn company was in a converted warehouse owned by Johnson. In 1953, the company built the next three hotels which, together with their first hotel, closed the road leading to Memphis. The second motel was built in the US 51 South. This was followed by two more in 1953, one on Highway 51 North, and the other at US 61. After Johnson's death in 1988, Wilson was quoted as saying, "The greatest man I have ever known died today." He is the greatest partner of a man Once they can. "What they started together, with Wilson then helping the project, became the Holiday Corporation, one of the largest hotel groups in the world.

In early 1956, there were 23 Holiday Inns operating with seven more because it opened at the end of the year. In 1957, Wilson began marketing the chain as "Holiday Inn of America", requiring its properties to be standardized, clean, predictable, family friendly, and accessible to travelers. The chain grew dramatically as a result, with 50 locations across the country in 1958, 100 by 1959, 500 by 1964, and 1,000 Holiday Inn (in San Antonio, Texas) opened in 1968.

In 1965, the chain launched Holidex, a centralized reservation system where visitors to the Holiday Inn can get a reservation, by teleprinter, for other Holiday Inn locations. The only comparable system at that time was operated by the airline (Saber debuted in 1963). Promoting itself as "your host from coast to coast", Holiday Inn adds a call center after the introduction of AT & amp; T 1-800 toll-free telephone service numbers in 1967, and updated its system as a desktop microcomputer, inventing the 1970s, found their way to a travel agent.

Branded as "The Lodge Owner of the Nation", the chain puts great financial pressure on traditional motels and hotels, setting standards for competitors like Ramada Inn, Quality Inn, Howard Johnson, and Best Western. In June 1972, with over 1,400 Holiday Inns worldwide, Wilson was featured on the cover of Time magazine and the motto of the franchise being "World Restaurant Owner".

In 1960, Holiday Inn started the franchise and opened the camp under the Holiday Inn Trav-L-Park brand. This recreation camp is listed in the Holiday Inn directory.

In 1963, Holiday Inn signed a long-term deal with Gulf Oil Corporation where it agreed to accept Gulf credit cards to fill food and lodging in all American and Canadian hotels, in exchange for Gulf service station buildings at many Holiday Inn properties, especially near major US and Interstate highways. The arrangement was copied by competing lodging chains and major oil companies during the mid to late 1960s, but fell out of favor after the 1973 oil crisis. The Gulf/Holiday Inn setting ended around 1982.

In 1971, the company built Holiday Inn University and Conference Center, a teaching hotel to train new employees, at Olive Branch, Mississippi. In 1973, the company built the Olive Branch Airport in the north of the University as a base for the company's aircraft.

The company then branched out into other companies, including Medi-Center maintenance homes, Continental Trailways, Delta Queen, and Show-Biz, Inc., a television production company specializing in allied country music events. Wilson also developed Orange Lake Resort and Country Club near Orlando and a network called Wilson World Hotels. The acquisition of the Trailways in 1968 lasted until 1979, when Holiday Inn sold Trailways to private investor Henry Lea Hillman Sr from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. In the years during that Trailways is a subsidiary of Holiday Inn, television commercials for Holiday Inn often show the Trailways bus stop at a Holiday Inn hotel. Wilson retired from the Holiday Inn in 1979. In 2014, the Wilson family still operates the hotel as part of the Kemmons Wilson Companies of Memphis.

Big Mark

The "Great Sign" is a roadside sign used by Holiday Inn during the original era of expansion from the 1950s to the 1970s. That's probably the company's most successful advertising form. It's very big and eye-catching, but expensive to build and operate. The manufacturer of the mark is Balton & amp; Sons Sign Company, and was originally designed by sketch artists Gene Barber and Roland Alexander. Wilson wanted a prominent mark, wanting that his height was at least 50 feet (15 m) and visible in both directions. He also wanted a modified tent to welcome different groups. The original mark cost $ 13,000. It is said that the color of the mark was chosen because they were the favorites of Wilson's mother. The popularity of the mark caused many imitations, some of which remain to this day.

In 1982, after Wilson's departure, the Holiday Inn board gradually issued a "Big Mark" to support the cheaper rear marks. The decision basically signifies the end of the Wilson era, and Wilson considers it the "worst mistake they have ever made". He loved the "Great Sign" so engraved on his tombstone, with the marquee reading "FOUNDER" and an arrow aimed at his name. The majority of signs are sold as scrap metal and recycled.

Some of the intact fragments of the famous sign have been restored and replaced, mostly the top of the Holiday Inn from the sign and the tent box. In 2006, a full mark was found. Demolished marks, complete with stars, marquee boxes, and mark markers, are found in a backlot in Minnesota. On June 3, 2007, was purchased by a neon sign restoration expert, to return it to a 1950s appearance. It will be shown at the National Save the Neon Signs Museum in Minot, North Dakota. An intact sign coming from a Las Vegas location stands outside the American Flag Museum in Cincinnati, Ohio. Another intact and operational Holiday Inn Great Sign is at The Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn, Michigan, and the other is with a private collector at Park Hills, Kentucky.

1980s - now

While still a healthy company, the changing business and demographic conditions made Holiday Inn lose its market dominance in the 1980s. Holiday Inns, Inc. renamed "Holiday Corporation" in 1985 to reflect the company's brand growth, including Harrah's Entertainment, Embassy Suites Hotels, Crowne Plaza, Homewood Suites, and Hampton Inn. In 1988, Holiday Corporation was purchased by UK-based Bass PLC (owner of the Bass beer brand), followed by the rest of the Holiday Inn hotel in 1990, when Wilson founder sold flowers, after which the hotel group was known as Holiday Inn Worldwide . The rest of the Holiday Corporation (including Suites Embassy Suites Hotels, Homewood Suites, and Hampton Inn brands) rotates to shareholders as Promus Companies Incorporated. In 1990, Bass launched Holiday Inn Express, a complementary brand in the limited service segment.

In 1997, Bass created and unveiled a brand new hotel, Staybridge Suites by Holiday Inn, entering an upscale, upmarket market in North America. In March 1998, Bass acquired the InterContinental brand, expanding into the luxury hotel market. In 2000 Bass sold the brewing asset (and the right on behalf of Bass) and changed its name to Six Continents PLC. InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) was founded in 2003 after Six Continents split into two daughter companies: Mitchell & amp; Butlers PLC handles restaurant assets, and IHG focuses on soft drinks and hotels, including the Holiday Inn brand.

The brand name Holiday Inn is now owned by IHG, which in turn licenses the name to the franchisee and the third party who operates the hotel under a management agreement.

In 1999, the hotel changed to Nickelodeon Suites Resort Orlando in 2005, opened, called "Holiday Inn".

The Wall Street Journal reported in 2002 that the company, headed by Ravi Saligram, produced a new 130-room "Next Generation" prototype to rebuild the brand. This will include a bistro-like restaurant and an indoor swimming pool. The first of these prototype hotels, the Holiday Inn Gwinnett Center, was built in Duluth, Georgia, in 2003.

On October 24, 2007, IHG announced the relaunch of Holiday Inn brands worldwide, posing problems for the remaining motels. The relaunch "is focused on delivering the best consistently in classroom service and physical quality levels, including a redesigned [and] signature bed and bathroom products" experience. The first re-launched Holiday Inn opened in the US in spring 2008. There are currently more than 2,500 relaunched Holiday Inn brand hotels worldwide, and the process of relaunching the Holiday Inn global brand is completed by the end of 2010. At that time, most HI motels are removed from the chain, with a few exceptions. (In the 1980s and 1990s, HI hotels were built alongside motel properties [ie Baton Rouge, Louisiana] to provide more facilities and new rooms.) When the relaunch took place, these motels were either destroyed or closed, even if full service hotels are already on site. Currently, less than 10 Holiday Inn motels are still operating, others have been replaced by newer Holiday Inn Express locations or switched to other chains.

In September 2008, IHG announced the creation of a new timeshare brand, Holiday Inn Club Vacations, a strategic alliance with The Family of Orange Lake Resorts.

Historical trademark conflict

  • For two decades, a hotel called Holiday Inn located in Niagara Falls, Ontario prevented Holiday Inn Corporation from operating one of its own hotels in the city because the name was already in use. This hotel uses a logo similar to the old Holiday Inn logo from the 1970s. The Holiday Inn Corporation directory refers to the hotel as "not part of this Holiday Inn system". The hotel also has a holidayinn.com domain, which forces a much larger company to use holiday-inn.com. In 2006, an agreement between IHG and Niagara Falls, Ontario hotel owners was reached that allowed both Hotel and Holidayinn.com to be incorporated into the IHG system.
  • During the 1960s and early 1970s, Holiday Inn hotels located in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina were simply called "Vacation" because a local motel already had the name "Holiday Inn". The Myrtle Beach motel started as Ocean Front Lodge in 1948 but changed its name to Holiday Inn in 1949 (three years before the chain's establishment), and posted a sign in 1955 with similar inscriptions to the chain, which it signed signed in 1954. The motel chain the first franchise in the area in 1956. The Myrtle Beach Hotel put up a sign resembling a "Great Sign" in 1968, and used "Ã, ®" with its name, although many of its goods came from suppliers. who think they sell to the chain. The Myrtle Beach hotel "began its concurrent use of proceedings at the Patent and Trademark Office" in 1970, which was suspended when the name was contested before the United States District Court for the South Carolina District (Florence division) in 1973. The court said Myrtle Beach hotel has many businesses repeated and not negatively affected by chain motels in the area. The 1973 command means Myrtle Beach hotels are granted the right to use names but with different writing styles. Concurrent use resumes for the Myrtle Beach hotel, which continues to operate as a "Holiday Inn", though it is necessary to use distinctly different fonts. The 1976 decision gave the Myrtle Beach hotel a right over service brand. A 1979 order rejected motions to modify the 1973 order, although it was believed the hotel had followed all the restrictions. The 1981 decision by the 4th Circuit Court of Appeals upheld the 1979 action.
