Where To Shop In The Chicago Loop â€
src: alivemag.com

Loop is the central business district or downtown Chicago, Illinois. It is one of 77 designated community areas in the city. The Loop is home to Chicago's core commercial, City Hall, and Cook County seats. At the end of the nineteenth century, the vast circular cable and railroad turns around the area, giving Loop its name.

The community area is confined to the north and west by the Chicago River, to the east by Lake Michigan, and to the south by Roosevelt Road, although the commercial core has grown to adjacent community areas. As a business hub, some of the companies hosting the Loop include Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME), the world's largest choice and open interest exchange contracts; the headquarters of United Continental Holdings, one of the largest airlines in the world; AON; Blue Cross Blue Shield; Hyatt Hotels Corporation; BorgWarner, and other large companies. The Loop is home to 500 acres of Grant Park; State Street, which hosts the historic shopping district; Chicago Art Institute; several theaters; and many subway stations and elevated transit stations are elevated. Other institutions in the Loop include Willis Tower, once the tallest building in the world, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the Lyric Opera of Chicago, the Goodman Theater, the Joffrey Ballet, the Harold Washington Public Library Center and the Chicago Cultural Center.

In what is now the Loop, on the southern bank of the Chicago River, near the Michigan Avenue Bridge today, the US Army established Fort Dearborn in 1803. This was the first settlement in an area sponsored by the United States. In 1908, the Chicago address was made uniformly by naming the State Street junction and Madison Street on the Loop as a division point for addressing North, South, East or West on the Chicago road network.

Etymology

It is believed that the origin of the term "Loop" comes from the loop of the cable car loop in the downtown area, and especially of the two loop-sharing lines, built in 1882, limited by Van Buren, Wabash, Wells, and Lake. Other research has concluded that "Loop" was not used as a proper noun until after the 1895-97 construction of the elevated railroad loop of the Union.
