Histori
From the storied past, only the chimney left on the site ever helped give Pittsburgh the name "City of Steel."
In 2005, World Industrial Workers celebrated their 100th Anniversary, having been formed in 1905 from the frenetic labor struggles of that time. Local celebrations include events held at Pump House at The Waterfront site. http://www.iww.org/en/taxonomy/term/244/all?page=2
Homestead Attacks
The Pump House was the location of the Pinkertons landing that navigated the river in 1892 with the intention of providing security at the plant that was subjected to the Workers Association of the Association of Combined Workers of Iron and Steel on the instructions of Henry Clay Frick. The battle that followed, known as Homestead Strike/Battle of Homestead, killed sixteen people dead (23 injured) and rearranged the cause of the organization of the iron and steel industry in Pittsburgh for decades. The Battle of Homestead is one of the most famous strikes in American Labor History.

Layout and features
In 2002, Kaufmann's parent company, May Co., announced it would build a smaller version of the department store at The Waterfront. This is the first of its kind in department store companies that now no longer work. On September 9, 2006, Kaufmann became part of the Macy company.
Since then the store has been replaced with a Macy signboard. It remains one of Macy's smaller department stores in the chain.
In 2018, Macy announced the closure of this location.
Community engagement
Every May, The Waterfront welcomes the Southwestern Pennsylvania Partnership and many local youth guidance agencies to the City Center to talk to buyers about the importance of mentoring and the number of local children waiting for mentors. In October, The Waterfront recognizes the Month Consciousness of Domestic Violence along with Womansplace. In addition, they host walks to support research for cancer and polycystic kidney disease.
