History
In 1920, Harvey Baker Graves, a private investor, bought an area of ââ2.26 km square (5.9 km) to develop as a tourist resort. He named it Sunny Isles, the America Riviera.
When the Haulover Bridge was completed in 1925, the area was accessible from Miami Beach, attracting stream-widening developers, digging channels and inlets and creating islands and peninsulas to build a seaside property in Biscayne Bay.
In the 1920s, Carl G. Fisher built an all-wood horse racetrack with 12,000 spectators, known as the Fulford-Miami Speedway. The event, held on February 22, 1926, dubbed the Carl G. Fisher Cup Race, was a pioneer for auto racing at Sebring and Daytona. In September 1926, after just one race, the track was destroyed by the Miami Storm of 1926. The show was held at Fulford-by-the-Sea which is now North Miami Beach. Sunny Isles Beach was known as North Miami Beach until 1931, then known as Sunny Isles until 1997.
In 1936, the great Malt Malt, Kurtis Froedtert, bought the Sunny Isles. The Sunny Isles Pier was built and soon became a popular destination. The Sunny Isles grew slowly until the 1950s when the first single family home was built in the Golden Shores area. During the 1950s and 1960s more than 30 motels sprang up along Collins Avenue including Ocean Palm, the first two-story motel in the US. Designed by Norman Giller in 1948 developed and owned by the Gingold family for the next 45 years and provided a springboard for the economic development of the Sunny Isles. Tourists come from all over the world to vacation in exotic design themed motels along "Motel Row". One motel, The Fountainhead, named after its owner Norman Giller after Ayn Rand's novel. Starting in 2013, Ocean Palm Motel is closed.
In 1982, the half mile Sunny Isles Pier was designated a historic site. In the early mid-1980s, he recovered and reopened to the public in 1986. The pier was badly damaged in October 2005 by Hurricane Wilma. After eight years, it was renovated and reopened as Newport Fishing Pier on June 15, 2013.
In 1997, local residents chose to include as municipalities. Sunny Isles is named after Sunny Isles Beach. Sunny Isles Beach began a massive redevelopment during the real estate boom of the early 2000s with most of the high-rise condos and several hotels under construction along the shores of Collins Avenue (A1A) replacing most of the historic one and two-story motels in along the Motel Lines. In 2011, construction began on two other high-rise, Regalia, located on the northern border of the city along A1A, and The Mansions at Acqualina, located adjacent to Acqualina Resort & amp; Spa on the Beach.
