A sidelight in a building is a window, usually with a vertical emphasis, flanking a larger door or window. Sidelights are narrow, usually silent and find an adjacent door. While the most commonly found as supporting elements that emphasize the importance of the main entrance, sidelights can be used in any interior or exterior door where visual emphasis is desired, or where additional light or visibility is required.

Sidelights are often found along with transom windows and generally the size of the panel in sidelights matches the transom. Sidelight usually narrow can be placed on the second or only one side of the door and can include a sling or have a glass that stops into the frame.

Security and privacy issues
Although transom windows generally have no privacy issues associated with them due to their height, additional spaces usually need to be covered to ensure privacy. A number of window treatments can be used to enhance privacy on doors with sidelights. Miniblinds, micro-minibiles, and shirred curtains are among the window treatments that offer increased levels of privacy. Another option is stained or tilted glass, which can offer privacy while also contributing to the overall beauty of the building's design.
When approaching the building, security sidelights can be an incoming security factor. For example, for proper security the sidelight should be mounted on the side of the door without a door knob or handle. Sidelights give people to the interior of the building with a narrow view outside the house and as such doors without sidelights, especially in apartment buildings, should be equipped with peephole.
