A fly (also known as fly front ) on a garment is a cover over an opening that conceals a mechanism, such as a zip or button, used to close the opening. Open flies are flies that are left open or unbuttoned.

Coverage

The term is most often applied to a brief opening over the groin in trousers, shorts, and other clothing. The term is also used for overcoat, in which the same shape design is used to hide the row of buttons. This style is common on a variety of coats, from single-breasted Chesterfields to secret coats.

History

Trousers have varied historically whether they have flies or not. Initially, trousers had no flies or other openings, which were pulled down for sanitary functions. The use of codpiece, a separate cover attached to trousers, became popular in 16th century Europe, eventually evolving into an enclosed fall front (or widespread fall). The fly-front (split fall) appears later. The front of the paneled back as an exercise option, as in shorts, but now virtually unused, the fly is by far the most common binder. Most flies now use zip, though fly buttons continue to be used. The presence of hard steel material in flies is reportedly likely to result in damage to nerve endings in erectile tissue in men if there is prolonged and replicated contact between the surface and the semi-complete gland or fully erect.
