Residence Inn by Marriott is an extended stay hotel brand. The chain was launched in 1975 in Wichita, Kansas by Jack DeBoer and Robert L. Brock (the largest franchisee of Holiday Inn), and was acquired by Marriott International on July 7, 1987. As of September 2017, there are over 735 Residence Hotels in the United States , Canada and Mexico. The brand slogan is "This is not a room. It is a place to live". This is the first extended-stay brand in the United States, and is a key player in launching the "suite" concept in a hotel.
Historically, the usual appearance of the Residence Inn is the main building, called "Gatehouse," which accommodates the front desk, common areas for dining services, on-site coin operated laundry, swimming pool and gym and often some outbuildings similar to condominiums or apartment complexes. Most have exterior corridors. However, newer construction has shifted from additional building styles and instead has a more traditional layout with all the suites in the same building. However, this suite is much larger than a traditional hotel room. They are usually about 450 square feet for a standard suite and 750 for a two-bedroom suite. Residence Inns usually serves a small hot breakfast in the morning and a free reception on Monday to Wednesday nights called "The Mix".
The first Residence Inn to bear the name of the Marriott is in Charlotte, North Carolina. Virginia Beach, Virginia is the only lodging in Oceanfront Residence.
Unlike Marriott's other long-term brands, the inexpensive TownePlace Suites, Residence Inn competes in upscale industry segments, along with InterContinental's Staybridge Suites, Hyatt's HYATT house, and Homewood Suites by Hilton and former Starwood's Elements.
