Plainview is the county town and county seat in Hale County, Texas, United States. The population was 22,194 at the 2010 census.

In the 2000 census, there were 22,336 people, 7,626 households, and 5,666 families living in the city. Population density was 1,621.0 inhabitants per square mile (625.9/km 2 ). There are 8,471 units of houses with an average density of 614.8/sq., Mi (237.4/km 2 ). City racial makeup is 63.21% White, 5.87% African American, 1.13% Native Americans, 0.43% Asia, 0.06% Pacific Island, 26.53% of other races, and 2.77 % of two or more races. Hispanic or Latin of any race is 49.83% of the population.
There are 7,626 households where 40.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.2% are married couples living together, 13.0% have unmarried female households, and 25.7% are not family. 22.7% of all households consist of individuals and 11.2% have someone living alone 65 or older. The average household size is 2.82 and the average family size is 4.
In the city, the population is spread by 31.0% under the age of 18, 11.5% from 18 to 24, 26.0% from 25 to 44, 18.0% from 45 to 64, and 13.5% years or more. The median age was 31 years. For every 100 women, there are 91.7 men. For every 100 women age 18 and over, there are 86.7 men.
The average income for households in the city is $ 31,551, and the average income for families is $ 35,215. Men have an average income of $ 26,434 compared to $ 19,888 for women. The per capita income for the city is $ 13,791. Approximately 15.0% of families and 19.1% of the population are below the poverty line, including 25.1% of those under the age of 18 and 14.8% of those aged 65 and older.

The Texas Vice District Criminal Justice Office is located in Plainview. Regional V headquarters is currently opened in 1996 at the former Bank of America building.

- Harry Igo, president of the Plainsman Fertilizer Company, a division of W.R. Grace and Company. On July 26, 1945, Air Force Captain Igo and his crew transferred parts of the Little Boy atomic bomb on a Skymaster Douglas C-54 cargo plane from Kirtland Air Force Base (Albuquerque, New Mexico) to Hamilton Army Airfield, California. Igo and his crew did not know the contents of their cargo until the National Archives revealed it a few years later.

In media
The 1992 Steve Martin Leap of Faith film was partially filmed on site at Plainview. Until 2016, the water tower in the city center contains the name and mascot of the fictional city where the film is set: The Rustwater Bengals. The Quick Lunch Diner, where several scenes were filmed, is now closed, and the site is now home to Broadway Brew.
In the eighteenth episode of the second season Plainview's Vice is shown as a ghost town in a feature called "Delivering Us from Drought".
Education
Plainview City is served by the Plainview Independent School District.
Wayland Baptist University is a four-year university with about 1100 students on its main campus at Plainview. Branch of the South Plains College-Plainview
Llano Estacado Museum is situated in Plainview.
Bulldog is the mascot for Plainview High School.
Economy
On February 11, 2009, the Texas Department of Health Service ordered a full stop and full withdrawal of all products produced by Peanut Corporation of America's Plainview-based peanut processing facility after the discovery of "dead rodents, rodent droppings and bird feathers at the factory , "and the revelation that the factory has operated without a state license or inspection. The plant has voluntarily suspended operations one day before, and is not associated with a salmonella outbreak that has forced other PCA closures.
The largest employer is the Cargill beef processing plant, littered on February 1, 2013 due to the lack of animals entering from the local area due to the 2010-2012 South American dry season. The plant closure created a crisis at Plainview as the annual payroll of $ 15.5 million was lost and many of the 2,300 employees and their families moved after being fired.
