Navarre Beach is the coastal environment of Navarre, Florida in Santa Rosa County in the US state of Florida. It's on Santa Rosa Island, a barrier island in the Gulf of Mexico. This community is considered part of the Metropolitan Pensacola-Ferry Pass-Brent Metropolitan Statistical Area.
Immediately to the east is Navarre Beach Marine Park, a former state park of Florida. Soon to the west is part of the Gulf Islands National Seashore, and further west is the city of Pensacola Beach. To the north, in Santa Rosa Sound and on the mainland, is the Navarre community.
Navarre Beach experienced a typhoon, and severe damage was done by several people. Erin and Opal in 1995, Hurricane Ivan in September 2004, and Hurricane Dennis in July 2005 each having a significant impact on society. The storm of the homeland caused significant damage to Navarre Beach because of its position on the lowland barrier island. Other tropical cyclones have affected the area, while leaving no serious damage, such as Hurricane Katrina in 2005, Hurricane Ishak in 2012, and Hurricane Irma in 2017.
Much of the 1978 movie Jaws 2 was filmed in Navarre Beach. The hotel scene in the movie was filmed at Navarre Beach Holiday Inn, a complex that was later destroyed by Hurricane Ivan. A SpringHill Suites hotel with 161 rooms opened in April 2017 at the former Holiday Inn site.
A new dock was built to replace the damaged Hurricane Ivan. The dock deck is now 30 feet above the Gulf waters and is made with 800 wood panel breakaway, designed to break away during big waves. This type of construction is expected to protect the dock from more serious and expensive damage in the future of the storm.
On March 26, 2006, a "coastal renovation project" began, recovering sand lost by the 2004 and 2005 hurricanes. The project eventually added about 200 feet (61 m) of sand and 14 feet (4.3 m) tall to the side of Santa Rosa Island for the entire length of Navarre Beach. The project was completed in December 2006. Another round of coastal renovation completed in 2016.
