History

GTE was originally the largest non-Bell System phone company, and the second-largest phone service provider in the United States. It entered California by acquiring Related Telephone Companies in 1926. It would later merge with Western Utilities Corporation and its affiliates in 1964; provider number three (non-Bell System), Continental Telephone (ConTel), in 1991; and former Bell System member Bell Atlantic in 2000.

GTE consists of many small "mom and pop" phone companies that have been purchased to form the Public Telephone System, it leads the California Public Utilities Commission, in the mid-1960s to announce the GTE "the worst phone company in California, bar none." However, in the years following the report, GTE replaced most of the switching equipment, and many of its factories in Southern California. This leads to a higher service level compared to Pacific Bell.

When the area code 213 is divided into 213 and 310, Pacific Bell, then the area code manager 213, chooses to divide the area code 213 such that every prefix serving the GTE customer is moved to a new one. 310 area code, while many Pacific Bell customers remain within the 213 area code.

GTE California completed the transition from mechanical displacement to electronics in 1992.

In the 1990s, GTE California underwent several changes. In 1993, GTE bought ConTel. Its subsidiary ConTel of California, Inc. , which also serves parts of Nevada and Arizona, is absorbed into the California GTE.

In 2000, GTE was purchased by Bell Atlantic, becoming Verizon. The California GTE was later renamed "Verizon California, Inc."

In 2010, operations in Arizona, Nevada and some California (mostly in areas near the state border), including some areas of the former Contel of California, were sold to Frontier Communications, becoming Frontier Communications of the Southwest.

Verizon California remains an operating company that provides phone services to the original GTE region.
