The Ford Crown Victoria (colloquially called Crown Vic ) is a full-wheel-drive full size four-door sedan marketed and manufactured by Ford from 1992 to model year 2011 over two generations. Discontinued in 2011, the last Crown Victoria began production in 1991 at Ford St. Thomas in Southwold, Ontario, Canada. Dropping the previous LTD prefix, Ford instead revived the nameplate once used on the Fairlane two-door version sold in the North American market for the 1955 model.

The Crown Victoria shares the Ford Panther platform and major powertrain, body, and suspension components with Lincoln Town Car and Mercury Grand Marquis. Along with its rejuvenated Mercury and Lincoln variants, Crown Victoria is the latest full-frame rear-wheel passenger car produced in North America. Endurance associated with its layout popularized Crown Victoria with taxi owners and patrol vehicles/police pursuits commonly used in North America.

The original usage of the name

1955-1956

The first use of the Crown Victoria nameplate by Ford was on the 1955 model as part of the Ford Fairlane range. Separate from Fairlane Victoria's two-door hardtop, Fairlane Crown Victoria is given its own B-pillared roofline, with a stainless-steel band "crowning" the roof, an interpretation of bodystyle "victoria carriage". The first time Ford used "victoria" as a naming convention was in 1932 at the 2-door Victorian Victoria coupe and the larger Lincoln Victoria coupe. The variant of Crown Victoria, Crown Victoria Skyliner, replaces the front of the roof with acrylic glass. For the 1956 model, along with the rest of Ford's model, Fairlane Crown Victoria received the Lifeguard option package.

For 1957, Crown Victoria and Crown Victoria Skyliner were replaced as Ford Fairlane line-ups by the hardtop-pulled FordUniverse 500 Skyliner.

1980-1991

After hiatus for 23 years, Ford revived the Crown Victoria name for the 1980 model as part of the recently downsized Ford LTD model; LTD Crown Victoria served as a replacement for Landau 1975-1979 LTD. LTD Crown Victoria is sold as a two-door and four-door sedan, with LTD Country Squire sharing its interior trim.

In a mode similar to Lincoln Town Car, the standard vinyl roof is extended to the B-pillar, covering only the rear seats. To distinguish the Crown Victoria LTD from Mercury Marquis and Lincoln Town Car partners, the vinyl roof is fitted with stainless-steel tape to trim the B-pillars and roof tops; Crown Victoria is not equipped with B-pillar opera lamps.

For 1983, as part of an extensive re-design of mid-size and full-size models of all three Ford divisions, Crown Victoria LTD became a stand-alone model (in addition to the Mercury Grand Marquis); LTD standard being a midsize sedan, serves as a substitute for Granada.

After termination on the 1991 model, Crown Victoria LTD (and LTD Country Squire station wagon) was the last car to have the name Ford LTD in North America; the name is still used by Ford Australia until 2007.

First generation (1992-1997)

The Ford Crown Victoria was released for sale in March 1991 as a 1992 model. In an effort to optimize its availability for buyers, at launch, vehicle fleet sales were delayed for 14 months. To better distinguish the generation of buyers, the long-running prefix LTD was dropped. In line with the 1991 Chevy Caprice (its main competitor) design, 1992 Crown Victoria features a major exterior design on the previous generation chassis. Focusing on aerodynamics and fuel efficiency, Ford reduced the drag coefficient of the exterior from 0.42 to 0.34 (almost equal to 0.32 Ford Taurus).

Due to a market-oriented shift in family-oriented vehicles, Crown Victoria is offered exclusively as a four-door sedan, with a wood-inducted Country Squire LTD station carriage suspended. While Ford Taurus and Mercury Sable continue to produce with optional three-row seats, the role of Country Squire is effectively replaced by Ford Aerostar and Ford Econoline/Ford Club Wagon vans, and Ford Explorer SUVs.

During its launch, Ford Crown Victoria (and Mercury Grand Marquis) were involved in a unique loophole involving CAFE. Although manufactured in Southwold, Ontario (which, if not making them domestic cars), to avoid gas-guzzler taxes, Ford modifies its supplier network to allow two vehicles to be classified as imported vehicles, effectively moving the full-size sedan from Ford. the domestic CAFE fleet (alongside the Ford Mustang V8) and put them in an imported fleet (with Ford Festiva).

Chassis

As a substitute for the development of a new platform architecture from the ground up, Crown Victoria retains the Panther platform from its predecessor Crown Victoria LTD as its chassis. Although it was launched in 1979, the Panther chassis has increased widely to improve its behavior and treatment; major updates are made for steering and suspension adjustments. To improve braking performance, Crown Victoria acquires four-wheel disc brakes (only seen on Lincoln Mark VII and Ford Taurus SHO); anti-lock brakes and low speed traction controls are available as an option, which is becoming a popular feature. For 1997, several updates were made to improve handling response and steering control

Ford is based largely on the appearance of Crown Victoria on the first generation Ford Taurus, a display pioneered by Jack Telnack, Ford VP of Design. Though Taurus became very popular in its market segment, Telnack's "Aero" look proved to be a love or hate proposition with prospective buyers of large and wedge-shaped Crown Victoria. Along with the distinctive front-facing fascia, Crown Victoria will share the same roofline as the Taurus, similar body molds and bumpers, the same door handles, aircraft-style doors, and the same headlights and taillamps.

To reduce the aesthetic similarity with Mercury Grand Marquis, only the front door, windshield, and wheels are divided between them. For the interior, both vehicles are also given different seats, door trim and dashboard; Crown Victoria features an instrument panel with a swivel button while the Grand Marquis features a horizontal speedometer. An electronic instrument panel was introduced as an option.

Despite receiving a better than 1990s anniversary design from Chevrolet Caprice, 1992 Crown Victoria meets with the refusal of some critics and buyers, leading Ford to revise the exterior. At the end of 1992 for the 1993 model, a grating was added to the front fascia (though maintaining the "bottom-breather" configuration); for 1994, a red reflector strip was added to the trunk lid to connect the taillamps visually.

In 1994 for MY 1995, mid-cycle redesigns saw wider changes in Crown Victoria; the 6-slice grille replaces the egg box grille and the wider taillamps are added to the back (the number plate is moved to the trunk lid). For the interior, Crown Victoria and Grand Marquis adopt the same dashboard, using quick turns for instrument panel and controls and larger switches. In addition, the seats are redesigned. In late 1995, the wheel of the first-generation Ford "brick" airbag was replaced by a version with a smaller hub (moving the horn back to the steering wheel hub).

Features

Like Crown Victoria's predecessor, Crown Victoria is a six-passenger car; the front seat is a 50/50 split bench bench. The Crown Victoria is sold in two trim levels: base-trim and Crown Victoria LX, with the latter forming the majority of non-fleet sales. In addition, Crown Victoria P71 replaced the "S" market fleet in 1993; P71 is marketed specifically for the sale of law enforcement.

Like the Mercury Grand Marquis, the driver's airbags are standard equipment; airbag passengers were added as an option during 1991 production later, becoming standard in 1993 for the 1994 model year. Popular features are anti-lock brakes and low speed traction control. For 1996, the one-button entry system became standard, along with hidden audio antenna, rear defroster glass and colored glass. Automatic climate control and JBL audio systems are available on LX.

Touring Sedan

For 1992, Ford introduced Crown Victoria Touring Sedan as a performance-oriented main ornament. The Touring Sedan features a number of suspension and handling improvements over the Crown Victoria LX, featuring heavier suspension components than the police package version, also including wider tires, rear air suspension, speed limiter removal, and 210 hp dual-exhaust 4.6L V8. Optional features include speed-sensitive steering and large diameter sway bars.

Distinguished by a two-tone exterior paint scheme standards (with wheels painted), Crown Victoria Sedan Touring leather interior featuring a unique model with every feature available in the Crown Victoria at the time. For a lower price, Ford offers the enhanced performance of Touring Sedan LX as Handling and Performance Package along with a separate tow package. The Touring Sedan became the model was the only year, since discontinued after 1992. However, in various forms, Handling and Performance Package remains an option until 2007.

The second generation (1998-2012)

The second generation of Ford Crown Victoria 1998 began sales on December 26, 1997. Although Ford Ford Victoria 1992-1997 saw the critical reception and better market than the 1991 controversial style of Chevrolet Caprice, its sales struggled to match its Mercury. Grand Marquis Partners. In an effort to gain acceptance among buyers (and improve the similarity of spare parts), for the 1998 model, Crown Victoria adopted many of the Mercury Grand Marquis exterior designs.

After its introduction in 1998, the second generation Crown Victoria underwent extensive revisions for the 2003 model year. Introduced in April 2002, while the exterior was unchanged, almost the entire chassis was redesigned, with major updates on suspension and steering.

Chassis

The second-generation Ford Crown Victoria continues to use the Ford Panther platform, along with the Mercury Grand Marquis and Lincoln Town Car.

Under the 1998 redesign, several changes were made to the rear suspension to improve the behavior of public roads (at the expense of reduced drawing capacity). The original three-link coil-spring configuration is replaced with a four-link configuration with Watt connection. Continuing the use of four-wheel disc brakes, for 1998, the enlarged brake rotors required the displacement to 16-inch wheels for all Crown Victoria models. For 1999, ABS became standard on all Crown Victorias (except Police Interceptors).

For the 2003 model year, the suspension and rudder underwent extensive renewal, paired with a redesign of the chassis. For the first time, Crown Victoria adopted rack and pinion steering (replacing the long-running circulation ball system), with the adoption of an aluminum front control arm. Behind, twin-tube shocks (used since the mid-1960s), were replaced by monotonous surprises; to improve maintenance and handling on the road, shocks are moved outside the frame rails. As part of the suspension upgrade, Panther-chassis vehicles are equipped with wheels with high positive offsets (flat surfaces). For 2006, the steel wheels of Crown Victoria shifted to 17 inches in diameter.

The second generation is powered by a single engine, 4.6L SOHC 16-valve Modular V8. Brought from 1992-1997, the output for 1998 was raised to 200 hp (a dual-exhaust example generates 215 hp). For 1999, spark plug wires were replaced with coil-on-plug ignition (the feature that was first used on DOHC 4.6L V8). For 2001, the 4.6L V8 receives a new cylinder head (from Mustang GT), increasing output to 220 hp (235Ã, hp in dual-exhaust configuration). For 2003, engine output increased further, to 224 hp and 239 hp (depending on the exhaust configuration); an increase is generated from a tapping sensor fitted to the engine. For 2004, engine output increased for the last time, as Interceptor Police increased output to 250 hp (because the engine received Mercury Marauder air intake). For 2005, the engine underwent a minor revision, as it adopted the electronic throttle control "drive-by-wire".

From 1998 to 2004, 4R70W 4-speed automatic paired with 4.6L V8, replaced by 4R70E after 2005 (the latter designed to accommodate electronic throttle controls); 4R75W is exclusive to Police Interceptor 2004.

Body

Following the critical reception and poor sales of the 1991-1996 Chevrolet Caprice and Buick Roadmaster, for the second generation of Crown Victoria, Ford sought a more conservative exterior design, choosing a design similarity with the Mercury Grand Marquis over the Ford Taurus. Thus, Crown Victoria adopted the official notchback roofline from its Mercury counterpart, sharing the four doors (previously, the front door was handed out). At the front fascia, both the grille and headlights are enlarged. The rear fascia undergoes a redesign, since a large taillamp unit is installed in the corners of the body, replacing the previous wide design. Unlike its Mercury counterpart, Crown Victoria has almost no chrome trim, mostly limited to grille, window trim, and trunklid.

In contrast to the exterior, relatively few changes were made to the interior, updated for the 1995 model year. Offered with features similar to the Grand Marquis, Crown Victoria is largely distinguished by wood trim (optional) and seating material.

To comply with US federal regulations, for the year of 2000, Crown Victoria adopted an emergency baggage disposal system, in addition to other safety features, including LATCH anchors and "Belt Minder" (identical seatbelt reminder belts for unsupported front passengers). For 2001, the double airbag was redesigned, replaced by a dual-stage airbag; the power-adjustable pedal becomes an option. For 2003, side-mounted side airbags became an option. For the 2007 model year, optional side airbags are revised to protect passengers in better impact collisions.

For the 2002 model year, heated exterior heated glass became available, along with standard floor mats, upgraded linings; for LX-trim vehicles, luggage storage providers are an option.

In contrast to the extensive mechanical changes for the 2003 model year (and the redesign of the Mercury Grand Marquis and Lincoln Town Car), the Ford Crown Victoria has not seen an exterior change since the 1998 model (lattice change is limited to Police Interceptors). For the interior, small updates see redesigned front and rear seats (differentiated by higher head restrictions) and redesigned door panels.

During the 2003 model year (after production in December 2002), Ford began to lose Crown Victoria content, removing yellow turn color lenses, rearview side mirrors, front seat-seat pockets, locking fuel caps, automatic parking brake release, and light engine compartment. For 2004, in one of the first American cars to do so, Crown Victoria adopted laminated door glass as an option; along with providing additional security, UV light and heat filter features from the interior. In another revision, the overhead console was redesigned.

For 2005, Crown Victoria received a new non-locking steering column, which provided its first new steering model since 1998. For the first time, Crown Victoria offers the moonroof as an option; In line with other Ford vehicles, 6-disc CD changer is an option.

For 2006, the dashboard of Crown Victoria saw a revision, when Ford introduced a new instrument panel (for the first time since 1992). Along with becoming the final Ford Motor Company equipped with a tachometer in North America, Crown Victoria 2006 became Ford's final vehicle to adopt a digital odometer (because the digital instrument panel option was discontinued); Police Interceptors are given a meter machine clock.

Crop

Brought from 1992-1997 Crown Victoria, the second-generation Crown Victoria was marketed in two trim levels: Ford Crown Victoria and Ford Crown Victoria LX (each designated as P73 and P74). The Crown Victoria P71 was carried away, with Ford creating the Victoria Government Police Interceptor as a stand-alone model for 1999.

For 2000, Ford offered a "Special Edition" option package for LX; along with the nameake badging exterior, the interior is fitted with a two-tone leather seat.

For 2001, Ford offered a partner to the Mercury Grand Marquis LSE, named Package of Sports Performance. Along with the Standard Handling and Appearance Package, the Sports Appearance Package offers a 5-passenger seat with floor-mounted shifter, 5-spoke aluminum wheels, and monochromatic exterior trim. For 2002, the Sports Performance Package was renamed Crown Victoria LX Sport; with Handling and Performance Package, it comes with a rear air suspension, a rear axle ratio of 3.27: 1, and a larger rear stabilizer bar. Sharing many Mercury Marauder performance improvements (with engine exceptions), the LX Sport was produced until 2006. For 2007, most of the LX Sport features come back because the Handling and Performance Package is a stand-alone choice.

2008-2012: Fleet sales

In 2006, after taking into account the number of Interceptor Police (95% production) fleets, Crown Victoria's retail sales shrank to 3,000 (coming in 1,100 Ford GT supercar units), replaced by Mercury Grand Marquis partners by 18- to-1 margins. For 2008, Ford ended retail sales of Crown Victoria in the United States, removing the model from its website (later replacing it with the newly revived Ford Taurus 2008); through Ford Fleet, continued sales of Police Interceptor and commercial variants (taxi/fleet/LWB). Furthermore, the only retail market that sells Ford Crown Victoria is GCC/Middle East, with Crown Victoria sold alongside the Mercury Grand Marquis.

For 2009, the Crown Victoria model line is consolidating, as the LX is the only standard-wheelbase version of Crown Victoria (with Police Interceptor). In line with Mercury and Lincoln counterparts, 17-inch wheels became standard, with LX adopting 5-spoke alloy wheels from LX Sport/Handling and Performance Package. To streamline manufacturing, some features are standardized, including adjustable pedals and side airbags. To comply with federal regulations, hidden power window switches are added (replacing designs used since 1995).

The Ford Crown Victoria is the only Panther vehicle manufactured for the 2012 model, such as the Mercury Grand Marquis, the Lincoln Town Car, and the Ford Crown Victoria Police Interceptor that was discontinued during the 2011 model year. Because the 2012 production is illegal for sale in the United States (due to lack of control stability), the entire 2012 production is exported to the Middle East.

Termination

From the introduction of Crown Victoria in 1992 on the introduction of the Ford Five Hundred, the full-size American sedan layout underwent an extensive transition. In 1996, when General Motors ended production of Chevrolet Caprice, Buick Roadmaster, and Cadillac Fleetwood, almost all Crown Victoria competitors had adopted front-wheel drive, with a five-seater configuration largely replacing six-seater seating (with the first two generations of Toyota Avalon being the only Japanese brand marketed in North America with front-seat seats).

As an unintended consequence of Chevrolet Caprice's cessation in 1996, in the late 1990s, Crown Victoria gained a monopoly near the sale of police cars and a significant market share of taxi vehicles; Both segments see body-on-frame construction with rear-wheel drive as a favorable attribute. As the only remaining Crown Victoria contender is a Mercury Grand Marquis partner, to reduce internal competition, marketing for Crown Victoria is not emphasized, diverting buyers interested in Ford vehicles to Taurus; buyers looking for a full-size vehicle are shifted to Mercury Grand Marquis and Lincoln Town Car.

For 2005, Ford introduced the Five Hundred sedan, which lowered its casing components from the Volvo S80. The larger of the two cars meant to replace the Ford Taurus (with Ford Fusion), Five Hundred front-wheel drive is a completely new full-size Ford sedan since 1979. While almost one foot shorter than Crown Victoria, the Five Hundred offers dimensions a comparable interior; in a major shift, Five Hundred adopted a five-passenger configuration as standard.

Ford's 2006 restructuring plan The Way Forward finally closed the fate of Ford Crown Victoria. Coinciding with the 2008 withdrawal of Crown Victoria from retail sales (see above), in 2009, Ford announced the closure of 2011 from St. Thomas Assembly in Southwold, Ontario, Canada. At that time, production of the Panther Ford platform was discontinued, because the architecture can not support electronic stability control, it is necessary for 2012 vehicles sold in the United States and Canada. In line with the announcement, the Mercury Grand Marquis and Lincoln Town Car were discontinued without replacement (the first, as part of the closing of the Mercury brand).

From 31st August 2011, St. Thomas Assembly produces short-term model of 2012 Ford Crown Victorias; all vehicles are manufactured for GCC exports, as they are illegal for sale in the United States and Canada. On September 15, 2011, the Ford Crown Victoria last slid from the assembly line, destined for export to Saudi Arabia; the vehicle is the last Panther platform vehicle produced and the last vehicle produced in St. Petersburg. Thomas Assembly.

Like the Mercury Grand Marquis and Lincoln Town Car, the Ford Crown Victoria was stopped without a direct successor. The Crown Victoria Police Interceptor was the only Panther platform vehicle that was immediately replaced, when Ford introduced the Ford Police Interceptor sedan (based on Taurus) and Police Interceptor Utility (based on Ford Explorer); both vehicles are from each other and are a redesigned chassis version introduced by Ford Five Hundred. In other market segments, in 2010, the Ford Transit Connect variant was developed specifically for taxi usage. Although not the winner of the New York City Tomorrow of Tomorrow competition, Transit Connect has been adopted for use elsewhere in the United States.

Export

Canada availability change

Ford of Canada ended Ford Crown Victoria's retail sales after the 1999 model. Coinciding with Canada's Mercury in Canada, Crown Victoria was replaced in the retail market by Ford's (though Mercury-badged) Grand Marquis, which was replaced by Ford Taurus 2010. In the market fleet, Crown Victoria remains on sale (together with Interceptor Police) through termination in 2011.

Middle East Market

The great American sedan has always been part of the landscape in the Middle East. After the cessation of US-made Chevrolet Caprice production in 1996, Crown Victoria and its twin, the Mercury Grand Marquis became the car of choice for buyers of large American cars in the region. In 1999, General Motors responded to the loss of its market share in the region with the re-introduction of Chevrolet Caprice. No longer produced in North America, Caprice 1999 is a left-hand drive version of Australian Holden WH Statesman/Caprice.

Towards the end of production, sales of Ford Panther platforms remain strong in the Middle East, especially in Saudi Arabia and Kuwait. Since stability control is not required for export for this region, all 2012 model production from Crown Victoria is exported to the Middle East.

Models and specifications

Vehicles intended for the Middle East are referred to as "GCC Spec" vehicles, and Crown Victoria is available in five different trim levels in Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries:

  • Standard (assignment VIN P72)
  • Sports (P73)
  • Long-Wheelbase Standard (P70)
  • LX (P74)
  • LX Sport (P74)

While standard options and features vary from country to country in the region, the following are listed as standard equipment on all 2011 models:

  • Real dual exhaust system (except the Long-Wheelbase Standard)
  • 17 "5-spoke aluminum sports wheels with all-season P235/55HR17 tires (16" 9-spoke aluminum wheels and P225/60VR16 tires all season on LX models)
  • Remote keyless login system with keypad mounted on driver's door (rare option on Standard, not available on Standard Length Wheel Base)
  • 40/40 separate bleachers with rear air vents and 8-way power driver seats, 4-way front passenger manual seats (available in luxurious fabrics and leather trim, rear air vents not available on LX Sport models)
  • Speed control
  • Dual-Media AM/FM stereo/cassette with single CD player (except Standard and Standard Long-Wheelbase, equipped with AM/FM stereo/cassette player)

The guarantee for Crown Victoria is 5 years/200,000 kilometers (125,000 miles) - whichever comes first.

The driver-side flashing assembly is optional on Standard and Standard Long-Wheelbase models. In Sport, LX, and LX Sport models, the body is painted in a monochromatic paint style; with Ford offering Dark Toreador Red, Silver Birch, Tungsten and Black as a color choice. The trunklid spoiler available at Mercury Marauder is standard on Sport and LX Sport while optional on LX and Standard trims. The LX and LX Sport models are equipped with an 8-way driver and a front passenger seat. The DVD entertainment system (marketed as "DVD Entertainment System Exports") was added for the 2007 model year; it is optional on Sport models, LX and LX Sport.

For GCC special vehicles, the optional Handling and Package Performance available in the United States has been replaced by the Export Handling Package. In GCC-Spec vehicles, a 2.73: 1 rear axle ratio is used and a correct dual exhaust is included (standard equipment on all Crown Victorias export standards). Included as part of the Sport and LX Sport trims and optional on the LX, the package includes a rear-to-air tuned suspension, revised coil springs, shock absorbance handling and an improved rear stabilizer bar. At Crown Victoryas GCC-Spec, this option is externally distinguished by a monochromatic paint scheme.

In Kuwait, where he was controlled by the Mercury Grand Marquis, Ford only sold the Standard and Standard version of the Long-Wheelbase of Crown Victoria after 2000; The LX was discontinued in 1999. Due to the smaller market size in Kuwait, official importers/dealers focused on higher-engine vehicle sales at Mercury Grand Marquis.

2008 "Special Edition"

With no major redesign since 1998, to remain competitive, Ford designed a sleek package for Crown Victoria in the Middle East for the 2008 model. Known as Special Edition , it is only available on the P72 Standard model; this cosmetic package adds the following:

  • New 3-bar cabin.
  • Mercury Marauder spoiler, also found on models equipped with the Export Handling Package.
  • Chrome trims under the number plate on the front bumper.
  • Chrome trims under the Ford logo in the trunk.
  • The Special Edition logo on front fenders, trunks, and dashboards.
  • Premium head unit with one CD and cassette.

Everything else in this vehicle is identical to the Standard model. While these vehicles are not listed in the sales literature, in Saudi Arabia it is available with a choice of different colors. In Kuwait, this model is available only in black (due to market size); it costs around KWD 6,000 (about $ 22,000 USD).

Variant

Interceptor Police (1998-2012)

Beginning with the 1998 model year, the police version of Crown Victoria, formerly named Crown Victoria P71, was changed to Interceptor Police , and a new rear badge was assigned instead of a Victorian Crown civilian badge. Although the Crown Victoria badge is still affixed Police Interceptors are equipped with Road Appearance packages for vehicles requiring civil styling (undercover car, office/city pool vehicle, fire brigade, etc). Interceptor police models came with a black front grille and black rear fascia on the trunk lid, with chrome trims under the tail lights until 1999 models and black coatings under tail lights in 2000 and later models. 1999 to 2000 models have the unconscious version of standard chrome bar grille, while the 2001 and newer models have a black honeycomb grille type. They also have some "heavy-duty" mechanical upgrades, and newer models have additional safety features to handle fuel tank safety issues. Ford has replaced the Royal Victoria Police Interceptor with Ford Explorer and Ford Taurus versions that are upgraded and have heavy duty. In response, many police departments like that from Austin, Texas, buy the last reserve of Crown Victorias reserves to enable them to maintain a fleet of reliable police cars in the future.

Long-wheelbase commercial version (2002-2012)

In 2002, Ford introduced a long-wheelbase version of Crown Victoria, only available for commercial fleets (mostly used by taxi companies) in the North American market. This version provides an additional wheelbase length of 6 inches (15 cm), made possible by new frames and longer body.

This version is not available to the general public, nor is there a stretched version of Police Interceptor. However, there was a special service version available for the police market from 2002 to 2006, with available road pruning options from 2002 to 2004, due to their targeted use mostly in the taxi and livery markets.

In the Middle East, long-wheelbase versions of both Mercury Grand Marquis and Crown Victoria are available to the general public.

Security and controversy issues

Fuel tank

While the car has been rated high for safety, there have been some controversies and lawsuits in the 1990s and 2000s over leaks of Ford Crown Victoria gas tanks after a certain type of high-impact impact, especially when hit on the back at high speed. This impact led to the failure of a fuel tank in Crown Victoria. Fuel leaking in combination with friction between vehicle and road was found to be the cause of the fire.

Reports that the cars were more vulnerable to fire during rear collisions are a simple combination of three things. Firstly, most law enforcement agencies rely heavily on Crown Victoria as their primary vehicle, meaning that any police-related car accident is very likely to involve Crown Victoria. Second, accidents happen because the officers deliberately park their vehicles close to the active traffic to protect the stopped riders - something that most civilians never do. Third, affected vehicles often travel, or above, legal limits posted (65 to 75 mph (105 to 121 km/h) in most jurisdictions).

The condition was exacerbated by the installation of police equipment that drilled the pack tray in the trunk compartment. Due to the orientation of the gas tank, drilling through the pack tray can cause drilling to the gas tank. The installer also uses a screw that is set directly to the partition and facing the fuel tank. In the case of high-energy collisions, these screws can be forced into the tank, both of which break the tank and may act as a source of spark. Long bolts for mounting heavier equipment are also immediately suspect. The manufacturer provides an aftermarket protector to help prevent these items from piercing the tank during a collision. Furthermore, many investigations, whether conducted by federal/state agencies, and police departments themselves, have found that removable items in the trunk are not stored properly. These items become tank-penetrating projectiles during rear-crash scenarios. Ford's second solution came in the form of a withdrawal kit including a pattern for marking unsafe areas (for drilling) in the trunk compartment. Also includes kevlar rubber and hard ballistic nylon protector for lower differential cover shock bolts. They also include a kevlar based rod liner. Ford used a similar device on passenger vehicles of the early 1980s model. For 2005 and newer models, Ford offers an onboard fire prevention system for the Victoria Police Interceptor unit. The system itself is integrated with the anti-lock braking system as part of activation, and can be manually enabled. However, Ford does cite some of the limitations of systems related to fuel loss and impact speed.

Although many court cases demand Ford with partial responsibility for accidental fires, the company was never found responsible in the Crown Victoria crash.

In particular, only the Ford Crown Victoria and the new Ford police car have been certified for high-impact collisions, adding credibility to Ford's assertion that fire collisions are the result of extreme and unfavorable situations.

The intake manifold deficit

The 1996 to 2001 model is inclusive, using an all-composite intake manifold, which is subject to cooling leaks. The end of 2005 Ford completed a class action lawsuit. See Intake Manifold Defect for details. This problem can be fixed by upgrading the intake manifold to the 2002 and later versions.
