The Fisherman's Island is the census-designated place of metropolitan Miami, Florida, United States, located on the barrier island of the same name. By 2015, Fisher Island has the highest per capita income everywhere in the United States. CDP has only 218 households and a total population of 467.

Named for automotive pioneer pioneer and coastal real estate developer Carl G. Fisher, who once owned it, Fisher Island is three miles off the coast of mainland South Florida. There is no road or cross road connecting to the island, which can be accessed by private boat, helicopter, or ferry. It used to be the home of one family of the Vanderbilts, and then several other millionaires, it was sold for development in the 1960s. The property was vacant for more than 15 years before construction began for very limited and limited multi-family use.

History

The island was created in 1905 by a dredging and reclaimed land project in and around Miami Beach. The development of Fisher Island began in 1919 when Carl G. Fisher, the land developer, purchased the property from real estate and real estate developer Dana A. Dorsey, the first African-American millionaire in southern Florida. In 1925 William Kissam Vanderbilt II traded a luxury yacht to Fisher for possession of the island.

After Vanderbilt's death in 1944, the ownership of the island was handed over to the heir of the United States Edward Moore. Moore died in the early 1950s, and Gar Wood, the inventor of a millionaire hydraulic construction equipment, bought it. Wood, a speedboat fan, made the island a family retreat. In 1963, Wood was sold to a development group that includes the local Key Biscayne millionaire Bebe Rebozo, native Miami and United States Senator George Smathers and then former US Vice President Richard Nixon, who had promised to leave politics. During his next presidency from 1968-1973, and during the Watergate scandal, Nixon maintained a house in the nearby Key Biscayne known as "Key Biscayne Whitehouse" which was formerly the residence of Senator Smathers and adjacent to Rebozo, but none of the three had ever lived on Fisher Island.

The Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science (RSMAS) from the University of Miami retained the Comparative Sedimentary Laboratory on Fisher Island from 1972 to 1990 under the leadership of Robert Ginsburg.

After years of legal battles and change of ownership, further development on the island finally began in the 1980s, with architectures that fit the original 1920s Spanish-style houses. Although there was no longer a single island island, in 2005, Fisher Island was still somewhat inaccessible to the public and unwanted guests, and as exclusive to modern standards as during the Vanderbilts, provided similar protection and retreats to its inhabitants.. The island contains luxury homes, hotels, several apartment buildings, an observatory, and a private marina. Boris Becker, Oprah Winfrey, and Mel Brooks are among the celebrities with homes on the island.

In 2005, the island sought to merge as a city, but the Miami-Dade District Commission did not support this initiative.

Controversy

In 2006, the International Service Workers Union (SEIU) began organizing workers at Fisherman Island in preparation for a petition for recognition as the employee's bargaining representative. The campaign peaked on June 15, 2007 with a march to the mainland ferry terminal ending with the capture of workers. The New York Times wrote an exposure of the situation. In the article, residents are portrayed not caring about the welfare of society, but citizens disputed this characterization, insisting that the island is among the financially successful, compassionate people who have established some charitable activities on the island, providing health insurance to their employees and involved in various art organizations in the Miami-Dade area. Unions argue that the wages provided by the island are too low for employees to care for their families and that the health insurance provided is beyond the reach of most island employees.

Case of bankruptcy of Fisher Island

One of the last developed land parcels on the island, a 15-hectare site approved for housing construction facing the shipping lanes separating the island from Miami Beach, is for several years subject to protracted legal battles between Inna Gudavadze, widows the late Georgian billionaire Badri Patarkatsishvili, and investors aligned with distant relatives and former business associate, Joseph Kay.

A verdict handed down by the United States District Court for the Southern District of Florida on October 16, 2013 was upheld in the US in 2010 a previous assessment of the Supreme Court of Gibraltar that comprehensively rejected the "wholly unconvincing" case brought by Joseph Kay. The development is now being completed under the supervision of Inna Gudavadze and the Patarkatsishvili family.
