A storefront , also store window (English English) or store window (American English), is a window in a store that displays goods for sale or designed to attract customers to the store. Typically, this term refers to a larger window at the front store façade.

History

The first display windows in stores were installed at the end of the 18th century in London, where conspicuous consumption rates grew rapidly. Retailer Francis Place was one of the first to experiment with this new retail method at its founding in Charing Cross, where it installed storefronts with large glass windows. Though this is criticized by many, he defends his practice in his memoirs, claiming that he "sells from the window more goods... than the salaries of paid workers and household expenses.

The window display in the boutique usually has a dressed mannequin in it.

Showcasing merchandise in the shop window is known as "window dressing", which is also used to describe the items displayed themselves. As an expression, "window dressing" means something done to make a better impression, and sometimes implies something dishonest or deceiving.
