Cosmetic dentistry is commonly used to refer to any dental work that improves the appearance (though not necessarily the function of) the teeth, gums and/or bites. It mainly focuses on improving dental aesthetics in color, position, shape, size, harmony and overall smile look. Many dentists call themselves "cosmetic dentists" regardless of their special education, specialization, training, and experience in this field. This is considered unethical with the dominant marketing purpose of the patient. The American Dental Association does not recognize cosmetic dentistry as a specialized field of dentistry specialization. However, there are still dentists who promote themselves as cosmetic dentists.

Type

In the past, dental fillings and other dental restorations were made of gold, amalgam and other metals - some of which were lined with porcelain. Now, dental work can be entirely made of porcelain or composite material that more closely resembles the appearance of natural tooth structure. These dental ingredients are attached to the underlying tooth structure with the resin adhesive. Unlike the silver patch (amalgam) they are completely free of mercury. Cosmetic dentistry has evolved to cover many new procedures and new dental materials continue to be introduced.

Credentialing

In the United States, a formally trained specialist recognized by the American Dental Association undergoes a minimum of 2-3 years of rigorous full-time education after graduation from a dental school. This specialization also leads to board certification approved by the American Dental Association.

Non-specialists with additional education related to a particular interest. Certification by these groups will not lead to approval by the American Dental Association.

American Cosmetic Dentistry Academy

The American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (AACD) is the largest international dental organization in the world, consisting of general dentists, specialists, and laboratory technicians focusing on cosmetic arts and dentistry. Founded in 1984, AACD has over 7,000 members in the United States and more than 70 countries worldwide. Academy members include dentists, dental laboratory technicians, educators, researchers, students, janitors, companies and dental assistants. AACD members seek continuing education through lectures, workshops, and publications to keep abreast of all advances in cosmetic dental techniques and technologies. In 1984, AACD was established and has met the need for credentials in cosmetic dentistry. The purpose of the American Board of Cosmetic Dentistry (ABCD) is the testing, analysis, and evaluation of dental services and laboratory technicians for the purpose of providing AACD Accreditation in cosmetic dentistry. However, this certification is not approved or recognized by the American Dental Association.

American Society For Dental Aesthetics: Estimated in 1976, the American Society for Dental Aesthetics was developed with one goal: continuing dental education to teach the most sophisticated dental and restoration techniques available. To become an ASDA member, the dentist should show a minimum of five years in dental practice, or a two-year postgraduate training in an approved program; attendance at least for two sustainable dental education seminars sponsored by ASDA; nomination by members accompanied by two letters of recommendation by members of the Society; presentation of five (5) cases illustrating the concept of aesthetic dentistry.
