The original development of Century City is Ratanga Junction themed park and Canal Walk shopping center.
Canal Walk is the largest shopping mall in Africa and the Southern Hemisphere in a removable area when it opened in December 2000 at 125,000 mò. Recently expanded to 141 000m², this mall contains over 400 stores, 20 cinemas, many restaurants and bars and entertainment areas. Architecturally, it was designed in "Cape Venetian" style in mind. Two twin office towers - Canal Walk Towers - resting on top of the mall.
Ratanga Junction Park has many monetary problems, resulting in abatement, off-season closures and the addition of year-round conferences and entertainment facilities.
Nearby there are 204 rooms StayEasy by Southern Sun hotel. This was the first hotel in the area when it opened in early 2001.
The Colosseum is a construction of R300 million mixed use, including ground floor cafes, offices and four star hotels with 70 rooms. Construction completed in January 2007.
Adjacent to the mall are two 11-story towers called Crystal Towers which opened at the end of 2009. It is the largest development in the area after Canal Walk itself. The development of R750 million consists of the first 5-star hotel in Century City with 180 rooms, as well as 91 luxury apartments and one office block.
Century Gate and The Estuaries are two additional commercial developments, collectively costing R500 million.
Many other corporate offices are located in and around Century City - especially along the N1 highway. Mercedes-Benz and Daimler/Crysler/Jeep have a lifestyle center adjacent to Canal Walk. Similarly, BMW and Porsche both have buildings in the police station as well.

Villa Italia and The Oasis are two multi-storey residential building buildings, the latter serving a retired community of upper class.

Preservation
Built in wetland areas, Century City must adhere to conservation measures. Intake Island is a 16 hectare wetland under development. Wetlands naturally clear water in the ducts and provide green lung in high density development.
Criticism
There are fears that the City of Century will lead to decentralization from Cape Town's main business district, but thanks to city improvement efforts (CID) and urban renewal efforts pioneered by Cape Town Partnership (CTP), this has not happened yet. This development thus remains another commercial node in the Cape Town metropolitan area while the city center remains vibrant. Recently, development has been criticized for causing traffic problems. Steps have been taken with the aim of improving congestion during peak hours.
