Belinda Jo Carlisle was born in Hollywood, Los Angeles, California on August 17, 1958 to Harold Carlisle, a gas station employee, and his wife, Joanne (nÃÆ' à © e Thompson), a housewife. His mother met his father, who was twenty years older than him, at the age of eighteen, and Carlisle was born nine months later. She was named after her mother's favorite movie, Johnny Belinda (1948). Carlisle was the first of seven brothers, with three brothers and three sisters. When he was five years old, Carlisle's father left their family, and he had stated that he spent most of his childhood poor. As a teenager, she remembers having "like, two clothes." According to Carlisle, her mother is very religious, while her father is not. In an interview with Slash magazine, she describes herself as a rejecter from the Southern Baptist family.
Her mother would later marry Walt Kurczeski, whom Carlisle said was an alcoholic, and with whom she had a tumultuous relationship. The family often moved during his childhood, from Simi Valley to Reseda, before settling in Burbank when Carlisle was seven years old. At the age of ten, Carlisle began to express his interest in music, and remembered The Beach Boys, Cat Stevens, The Stylistics, and The Animals as early musical influences.
The family moved again during Carlisle's teenage years, this time to Newbury Park; he attended Colina Junior High School in Thousand Oaks, and then Newbury Park High School, where he was a cheerleader. During his teenage years, Carlisle became a rebel: "By the time I reached the age of fourteen, I really went wild," he said. "I ran away from home, smoke pot, sour down... just call it, I'll try it." After high school, Carlisle worked at the House of Fabrics store, and as a photocopier at Hilton Hotels Corporation in Los Angeles at the age of eighteen. He took a night class attending a beauty lecture, but out in the first year. At the age of nineteen, Carlisle left her parents' home to pursue a career in music.

Careers
Initial and Go-Go's
Carlisle's first attempt into music was in 1977 as a drummer for the punk rock band Germs, under the name Dottie Danger. She was recruited into the band by Lorna Doom, whom she met in an art class when a student at Thousand Oaks High School. However, his time in the band was short because of his contract mononucleosis, and he never recorded or performed live with Germs. According to Pat Smear, after quitting, he introduced his friend, Donna Rhia, who became his successor. Carlisle did not appear on a recording that introduced the band to a 1977 performance at Whiskey a Go Go, heard on live album Germicide (1977). Around this time, Carlisle did some back-up singing for Black Randy and Metrosquad.
Soon after leaving Germ, he founded The Go-Go (originally called The Misfits), with friends and fellow musicians Margot Olavarria, Elissa Bello, and Jane Wiedlin. Olavarria and Bello were soon out of the group and the new line-up included bassist-turned-guitarist Charlotte Caffey, bassist turning guitarist Kathy Valentine, and drummer Gina Schock. All five women are mostly untrained musicians, and Carlisle recalls having to use tape as a fret marker during their initial songwriting: "[Charlotte] should show us how to install our amplifiers," he said.

Peter Fawthrop of AllMusic writes "Every bit as Go-Go, that is, as non-hits and unusual material. While Go-Go sound is intact, there is no" We Got the Beat "or "Head Over Heels" can be found It is quite possible that in this pop-rebirth, The Go-Go's decide it now or not... This album does not attempt to update the band's sound with hip-moves or electronic frippery, which God has to blessing them, indeed. The holder of girls in the pop world today remains so strong that Green Day's Billie Joe Armstrong wrote the song ("Unforgiven") on the perfect Go-Go dragging ".

The style and influence of music
Carlisle has been noted by critics for his dynamic soprano vocal range. While Carlisle's discography is good with Go-Go and in his solo work has been dominated characterized as pop music, some music scholars such as Greil Marcus have recorded encounters of subtle punk influences as well as pop rock, especially in the early Go-Go releases (Marcus suggests that every trace of punk brought from Carlisle's short term in Germ).
Carlisle has been alternately portrayed by critics as "punk diva" and "pop princess." As a singer at Go-Go's, Carlisle is associated with a new wave of genre, and the band is commented on by critics for their style of "punk [ed] punk with the sounds of California's surf music." The next solo release, starting with a solo debut titled herself, Belinda (1986), was criticized by critics as more refined contemporary pop music.
His early inspirations during his childhood were The Beach Boys, Cat Stevens, The Stylistics, and The Animals. As a teenager, he saw Iggy Pop on the cover of The Stooges' Raw Power at a record store, an album he credited as a gate that exposed him to punk and rock art that plays like The Velvet Underground. , New York Dolls, Roxy Music, and The Sex Pistols. In an interview in 2013, Carlisle stated that despite having recorded his abundance throughout his career, he "did not really listen to pop music," and was recently inspired by jazz artists like Miles Davis.
Personal life
In 1986, Carlisle married political producer and filmmaker Morgan Mason, son of actor James Mason. He made appearances in Carlisle's music videos "Mad About You" and "Heaven Is a Place on Earth". In a 1990 interview with Spin , Carlisle stated that he was not close to his siblings or his parents, saying: "I want to be close to them I feel uncomfortable I think I feel guilty sometimes about my success in some ways. "
During the early stages of his tenure with Go-Go's, Carlisle developed a serious addiction to cocaine and alcohol that will last for thirty years. At the same time, he also developed an eating disorder, which he said came from a media comment about his appearance; Excessive use of cocaine Carlisle helps keep her weight down. In addition, Carlisle admits using LSD, quaaludes, and MDA regularly as both adolescents and adults. In a 2017 interview, he told The Guardian that he "could not believe he was not dead."
After a three-day cocaine feast in 2005, Carlisle said he saw himself in the mirror and "did not see light or soul" in his eyes: "I just thought, 'I know I do not look like me anymore.'" The same morning, has auditory hallucinations that say he will be found dead in a hotel room if he does not stop using drugs. The incident caused Carlisle to seek calm, and he was aware since 2005.
He told The Sydney Morning Herald in 2014: "I do not smoke anymore, I do not drink anymore and I'm not using drugs anymore I'm very interested in my Buddhism I found changing 40 real parts on time for me. "Carlisle stated in his autobiography Lips Unsealed: A Memoir that he has practiced Nichiren Buddhism as a member of Soka Gakkai International since 2002, and he often mentions in a press interview that he sings Nam My ? h? Renge Ky? every day. He also praised this exercise by helping him maintain his composure.
Activism
Carlisle is a supporter of several causes. He has been a staunch supporter of LGBT rights, which he published after his son James came to him at the age of fourteen. Carlisle is also a vegetarian and animal rights advocate. He and his bandmates were the first stars to pose for PETA's "Rather Go Naked Than Wear Fur" campaign in 1990. In a 2013 interview, she talked about going back to vegetarian after a long break, stating that
I fell out of a veggie cart and never felt happy about it. I would not allow myself to think of a plate of meat as an animal, but I know deep in it, and in fact it's dirty, especially chicken. I am full of shame. Then I started practicing yoga, which was all about nonviolence, and realized eating meat did not fit that. I now teach yoga, and I am very proud of not supporting farming and socially responsible.
He donated his song "Bless the Beast and the Children" to the album Tame Yourself to benefit PETA.
In 2014, Carlisle co-founded Animal People Alliance, a non-profit organization based in Calcutta, India, which raises funds and trains and employs poor women to care for street animals.
