Samsung Galaxy S5 is an Android smart phone manufactured by Samsung Electronics. Inaugurated on February 24, 2014 at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, ââSpain, was released on April 11, 2014 in 150 countries as a direct successor to the Galaxy S4. As in S4, S5 is an evolution of the previous year model, placing special emphasis on building upgraded with textured back cover and IP67 certification for dust and water resistance, smoother user experience, new security features such as fingerprint readers and personal modes, extended health features (such as a heart rate monitor installed), and an updated camera.
Galaxy S5 receives most positive reviews; This phone is praised for its display, hardware, camera, battery life, and combines water resistance while maintaining removable battery and MicroSD slot. However, the S5 is criticized for its bloated software, inconsistent fingerprint scanners displayed on the phone, and its plastic design in light of premium competitor's smartphone body.
In August 2015, after the launch of its newest flagship, Galaxy S6, Samsung released the latest version called "Galaxy S5 Neo" which has Exynos 7 Octa (7580) processor clocked at 1.6Ã,Ã GHz. It has 2 GB of RAM, 16 GB of internal storage and comes with Android 5.1.1 "Lollipop". Samsung Galaxy S5 Neo Canada has 7.0 "Nougat" with Samsung Experience.

Release
Galaxy S5 was inaugurated on February 24, 2014 as part of the company's presentation at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, âââ ⬠<â ⬠Samsung announced it will release the S5 on April 11, 2014 in 150 countries - including Britain and the United States. On June 18, 2014, Samsung launched the LTE-Advanced S5 version, which was exclusively released in South Korea. Unlike other models, the LTE-A version also enhances the look to the quad HD, 1440p panel. Shortly after the release of the S5, it was discovered that some Galaxy S5 devices - particularly those on Verizon Wireless, suffered major bugs that caused the camera hardware device to stop functioning permanently, and displayed a "Camera failure" error on the screen whenever a user tried to use the camera. Both Samsung and Verizon confirm this issue, which affects a number of Galaxy S5 devices; Samsung instructs bug-affected users to contact companies or their operators to have their phones replaced under warranty. Specifications
Hardware and design
The S5 design evolves on the S4 design. It features a round, polycarbonate chassis carrying a "modern glam" look, imitation metal trim and a removable back cover. Unlike past models, the S5 back cover uses higher-quality soft plastics and dimpled to improve the grip. The S5 is IP67 certified for dust and water resistance. Thus, the phone can be immersed in water up to 1 meter (3.3Ã, ft) up to 30 minutes. The Micro-USB 3.0 S5 port uses a removable cover. S5 is available in Black Charcoal, Blue Power, Copper Gold, and Shimmery White colors. The S5 screen is a 5.1-inch (130Ã, mm) AMOLED 1080p Super panel, which is slightly larger than S4, and allows automatic adjustment of brightness and gamut.
Below the screen there are three buttons. The physical "Home" button in the center contains a friction-based fingerprint scanner. The "Recent app" and "Back" buttons are capacitive. In accordance with the Android 4.0 human interface guidelines, the S5 no longer uses the "Menu" button like its predecessor, although the keypad layout is still reversed compared to other Android devices with S5 button layouts (like HTC One X and Galaxy Nexus, whose "Back" button is to the left of "Home").
The S5 includes a 16 megapixel rear camera, which offers 4K video recording, autofocus phase detection (which can focus about 0.3 seconds), HDR real-time photos and videos, and image sensors with Samsung's "Isocell" technology, which isolate individual pixels in in the sensor to improve its ability to catch light and reduce crosstalk. Compared to conventional BSI sensors, this reduces electrical crosstalk by about 30 percent. Next to the camera flash on the back of the device is the heartbeat sensor, which can be used as part of the S Health software. The top of the device has an IR blaster and a headphone jack. IR blaster is a transmitter only and has an internal database of devices that can be controlled by Samsung's Smart Remote application.
The S5 is powered by an 801 801-80-core Snapdragon 801-core quad-core system with 2 GB of RAM. Although not mentioned during the main presentation, the variant (SM-G900H) with Exynos 5422 octa-core system-on-chip was also released in several markets. Like the previous model, it uses two groups of four cores; four Cortex-A15 cores at 2.1 GHz, and four Cortex-A7 cores at 1.5Ã,Ã GHz. Depending on the use of resources, the SoC can use a power-efficient A7 core for lighter processing loads, and switch to the A15 core for more loads. Unlike the earlier iterations, however, Exynos 5422 can run both sets of cores at the same time, not just one at a time.
S5 contains 2800 mAh lithium ion battery; This is a compatible Qi (requires optional Charging Filler) and also contains "Ultra Power Saving" mode to extend the battery life further; when enabled, all nonessential processes are disabled, and the screen switches to a gray scale rendering. Samsung claims that with Ultra Power Saving on, S5 with remaining 10% charge can last for 24 additional hours in standby mode. Another improvement in power efficiency comes from the use of Qualcomm's envelope trackers, which reduces the power used in connectivity.
Software
The S5 is shipped with Android 4.4.2 KitKat but has received updates, the latest being 6.0.1 Marshmallow. It has Samsung's TouchWiz software, which for S5 has a flatter, more geometric appearance than those found on S4. Certain aspects of the change are influenced by recent patent licensing agreements with Google, which require Samsung's TouchWiz interface to follow Android's "stock" design more closely. S5 adds the "My Magazine" Galaxy Note 3 feature to the leftmost page on the home screen, the Settings menu updated with a new grid-based layout, Kids Mode is added, while the S Health app is given an expanded function, integrating with a new heartbeat sensor on device, along with a new 2 Gear watch and Fit Gear activity tracker. The "Download Booster" tool enables the use of shared Internet on LTE and Wi-Fi to improve download speed. Due to operator policies, Booster Download is not available on the Galaxy S5 model released in the United States running KitKat 4.4.2, excluding T-Mobile US and US Mobile.
S5 contains a number of new security features. The fingerprint reader can be used to unlock the phone, while the SDK is available so that third-party developers can offer finger-oriented functionality in their app; for example, PayPal's integrated support for fingerprint sensors to authenticate online purchases. S5 also adds "Personal Mode", which allows users to store hidden apps and file folders that can not be accessed without additional authentication. The camera app is updated with a new "Shot & amp; More" menu that allows users to edit photos after they've been taken, and also add a new selective focus mode.
The update for Android 5.0 "Lollipop" was first released for the S5 model in Poland in December 2014. This update includes performance improvements, updated "Updated apps" display that uses card-based layouts, access to notifications on the lock screen, and TouchWiz interface modifications to comply with the Materials design language. In April 2016, Samsung released an update for Android 6.0.1 "Marshmallow" for the international S5 model. This enables new features like "Google Now on Tap", which allows users to search within the context of the information being displayed on the screen, and "Doze", which optimizes battery usage when the device is not handled physically.
Variant
Samsung released two rough editions of S5, S5 Active and S5 Sport . Both models feature the S5 design version with a complete set of physical navigation buttons and do not include the fingerprint scanner, but are otherwise identical to the S5 standard model. Both devices also include an exclusive "Activity Zone" application, which contains a barometer, compass, and stopwatch. The S5 Active adds an "Active Key" to the side of the device, which can be configured to launch certain applications at short and long presses; by default, the button launches Activity Zone. Sprint S5 Sport has additional Sprint Fit Live software, which serves as a hub for health-oriented content and S Health, along with MapMyFitness MVP services owned by Under Armor and Spotify music streaming service - this device comes with free subscriptions for both services. Both models come in different color schemes (gray, green camouflage, and red for S5 On, and blue and red for S5 Sport), and the S5 Sport is slightly lighter than the S5 On, at 158 ââg (5.6 oz) instead of 171 g (6.0 oz). S5 Active and S5 Sport was released in the United States in June 2014, and exclusive to AT & amp; T and Sprint respectively. The S5 Active was released in Canada in October 2014.
In June 2014, Samsung also released a dual SIM version of the Galaxy S5, called Samsung Galaxy S5 Duos , the SM-G900FD model. Duos has the LTE Galaxy S5 specification.
A hardware revision called Galaxy S5 Neo was released secretly in August 2015. The S5 Neo is a lower cost variant than the original Galaxy S5 that downplayed ratings SoC to Exynos 7580 Octa system-on-chip, while upgrading the front camera to a 5 megapixel unit. Other changes include the removal of a fingerprint sensor and a conventional USB 2.0 port as a replacement for USB 3.0 ports with waterproof cover, the latter a source of complaints from users who find easily damaged cover than usual, compared to previous year models. Samsung also released Android 7.0 Nougat with Samsung Experience that does not have the original S5. S5 Neo was originally available in Europe (SM-G903F) and Canada (SM-G903W).
Reception
Critical reception
The S5 received mixed positive reviews; critics recognize that S5 is primarily a technological evolution of its predecessor with some significant changes. Although praised for its improved performance and better quality, the S5 design is documented for maintaining the appearance and construction that is almost identical to the S4, and for not using higher quality materials such as higher quality metals or plastics. The S5 display is praised for its high quality, not too saturated like the previous model, and has multiple viewing angles, brightness status, and gamut settings to enhance its looks. TechRadar also notes that, despite its high processor power, some applications and interface functions experience performance issues, indicating that the S5 operating system may not be fully optimized for its on-chip system yet. The S5 interface is praised for having a cleaner look than the previous iteration - however, it is still criticized for it contains too many unnecessary features and settings.
The S5 camera receives most of the positive reviews for image quality enhancements provided by its Isocell image sensor, but is considered still not as good as its competitors, especially in terms of low-light images. While the S5 camera interface was praised for its sleek design, it was criticized for being too long to load, and the Selective Focus feature was chosen because it is not consistent in quality. Although praised for providing more usage than the Touch ID functionality on the iPhone 5s, the fingerprint sensor has been scanned because it requires unnatural vertical swiping, has inconsistent and unforgiving results, and is uncomfortable compared to a password or PIN in many use cases due to this deficiency. Berlin-based Security Research Labs found that because the S5 fingerprint sensor can be easily falsified, it allows unlimited opportunities and does not require a PIN after 48 hours of inactivity or on startup like Touch ID, and can be used to more than just unlock the phone , it "gives the attacked candidate [ sic ] a greater incentive to learn the simple skills of fingerprint spoofing." Engadget considers the heartbeat sensor to be equally unforgiving and sometimes inaccurate compared to other heart rate trackers, while The Verge feels that it is an excessive addition due to the simultaneous introduction of Samsung Gear Fit , which includes its own heart rate tracker, and possibly will also be purchased by those wishing to take advantage of S Health's S5 software.
Sales
The S5 is shipped to 10 million units retailers in 25 days, making it the fastest smartphone delivery in Samsung's history. Samsung delivered 11 million units of S5 during its first month of availability, surpassing units shipped from S4 in the same period of 1 million units. However, 12 million S5 units shipped in the first three months of availability, which is lower than S4 sales.
Because sales were lower than S5, in July 2014, Samsung reported the lowest profit in more than two years, and its market share decline from 32.3% to 25.2% over the past year. The loss of market share is primarily due to increased pressure from competitors - especially in the emerging low-grade smartphone market, and an already saturated market for top-class smartphones. By the end of 2014, it was reported that S5 sales fell 40% on the previous S4 model, driving management changes at Samsung.
